here's my speculation about professors' living arrangements:

I'm getting off track buuut what I'm trying to say is that I think professors had a lot more time to invest in their personal lives than we know. For example, Minerva McGonagall lived in Hogsmeade with her husband while teaching at Hogwarts. She went to school every morning and returned home in the evenings. I think professors would be given the choice to live at Hogwarts or at home with their family.
But if they do live at school, away from their families, for the majority of the year, I agree that it would be very sad.
