Walking over to an unclaimed cabinet, Janelle took out her wand. She took a moment to concentrate on the task at hand, although she was pretty confindent about this spell. Directing her wand at the cabinet and giving it an appropriate swish, she said, "Alohomora" Reaching for the cabinet door, Janelle was happy to see that it opened easily.

About to remove her box from the cabinet, Janelle noticed a nearby first year having trouble with the spell. She walked over to the girl, watching as she attempted the spell. "Hi, I'm Janelle. Do you need some help?" Hoping that the girl wouldn't be offended, Janelle continued. It always helps me to concentrate on what I'm trying to do first. Picture the lock opening in your mind and keep focusing on that. Then you have to say the incantation with confidence........like you mean it and you expect it to work. "Al-loh-ho-mor-uh" "Like that. Try it. Believe you can do it and you will."

Usually, that means less chances of back firing magic.”

She smiled encouragingly at the first year and motioned for her to try saying it with each syllable. ”Then, once you have it like that - you put it together to say it as you would when you cast. Alohamora.” She nodded her head and waited for the girl to repeat it back to her. ”When I started school, one of the best things I got told,” Thank you Cutty. ”Was to imagine what you want to happen. Your wand is channelling what you want to do, so when you point your wand at the cabinet, you need to draw an S shape in the air, say the charm and imagine the cabinet opening for you.”

It was a lot to take in, but hopefully that helped? She cast a glance at Melon and smiled. If she wanted to close her cabinet she could - but she was going to wait so that she could show the Ravenclaw.

So...why wasn't the cabinet unlocking? Lucy had no idea magic would be harder than what she expected. Clowns did it, for goodness sake. And they didn't even use fake wands.

Then, she found herself surrounded by older girls offering her pretty much the same advice. Which was totally a good thing because that's how you knew it was the truth, if more than one person said so. Lucy smiled up at them and the other girl who looked more her age. "Thanks."

"Al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah," she repeated to the girls. "Al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah?" Okay, it made sense that she had to pronounce the funny word correctly for it to work. What was new information to her - well, everything was new, but this especially - was that she had to wave her wand....not in a wave? In an 'S'? That was a thing?

Lucy pictured the cabinet opening, waved her wand in an 'S' in front of it, and said, "Alohamora," correctly this time. Then reached out and...shook the cabinet door as it was still locked. She looked up at the older girls expectantly because....it didn't work.
