And they were true Ravenclaws, knowing better than asking further about the pictures. He appreciated it, really. Brownie points for them. Or cookie points. Speaking of which, he moved the platter into full reach of the two girls, after Shacklebolt made a mad grab for one. Unfortunately, house points could not be awarded for such a thing. Time, would have to be enough of a thanks.

A brief bit of laughter left him at Sophie's explanation of exactly what she was writing about. He quickly covered it with a hand, and forced his humor to settle. "I appreciate the confidence, but I don't think I would quite qualify for Professor of the Month." Still a newbie, still getting the hang of everything. Including having kids call him 'sir'. Merlin did it make him feel old.

Lowering his hand, he gave the young woman a knowing smile of his own. "It's what I have an office for, but you might be surprised how many kids come to you." She was, after all, a more approachable figure than a Professor, and if students were having as much trouble as it sounded like with their Patronuses.....

He trailed off in thought for a few moments, barely catching Shacklebolt's answer, and nearly missing restraint on the instant reaction of facepalming. Encouraging. He needed to be encouraging. It was darn well near impossible.

Letting out a huff of air, Sabel fixed the young girl with a serious look. "I'm going to be very blunt with you, because the MLE is not a place for fanciful notions. And that, is a very dangerous perception you have, Miss Shacklebolt. It's not fun, it's not cool." Unless she had been talking to one Alexa Cambridge. Circe help him if she had been.

"Rewarding, at times," Maybe. Merlin even he sounded tired to his own ears. He wasn't going to baby them on the topic. Tate had skirted it, Damien had buffed it up. He'd find a middle, truthful ground. "But not without cost."

They were WELL on their way to being favorites, clearly.

She got comfortable in the chair, keeping an eye on everyone's posture and body language to gauge the situation well, and she raised a curious eyebrow at his laughter. "We don't know that yet," she offered innocently. "M'trying to scope you out for the future. Get an idea of who you are now before y'teach us so we can know how being a professor changes you, if it does at all. Like... some kids forget that professors are people, TOO, and I think it's cool to notice that a lotta professors end up enjoying themselves more than they thought they would originally, and some become less grumpy and more friendly, and it's cool to know where you're at now, y'know? This is a new chapter in your life. How's it going to change you? Are you gonna end up hating teenagers? Are y'gonna become more strict? Gain more empathy and compassion? Y'gonna start a campaign to shut the school down 'cause so many dangerous things happen around here and you become super passionate about our safety? M'not asking you these things - m'not asking for you to tell me anything about you now. I actually don't want you to - m'just observing. Trying to figure you out. S'a Ravenclaw thing." Probably. She shrugged.

He thought kids would come to her? Well... Merlin, sure, she supposed her friends might. And aside from perhaps Zahra, Sophie didn't know that she had any enemies or people who wouldn't want to approach her... except maybe Gabe, too, but he was doing well at being less afraid of her...

...Merlin, he was GORGEOUS, wasn't he? Completely distracted from her train of thought, Sophie just grinned goofily at the professor. Just oogling a little. On accident.

And in that moment, Sophie Brown decided she wanted to change the man's name plates to "DaBest." Professor DA BEST because he was DA BEST. She needed to find a charm that would let her change letters like that. HER PERSONAL ASSIGNMENT FOR LATER.

She was drawn back to the conversation at the professor's stern tone, and the way he talked about... a COST. The prefect stiffened ever-so slightly, squinting a little, and thought of her own Hit Wizard father.

Yes. There was definitely a cost.

Most of the talking was being done between the professor and Sophie, which Evie contently listened to. Except when Dakest's attention turned back to her, Evie's heart sunk. Fanciful notions? She hadn't... but... Evie tore her eyes away from the professor as he crushed her dreams told her that the MLE wasn't cool or fun and that the one thing she finally decided she might want to do when she got older wasn't right for her (a mild exaggeration of what he said, but that's how she was taking it). She placed her hands on her legs and smoothed out her skirt, her cheeks an embarrassed pink. Of course he would know. He was in the MLE and he saw it every day, so maybe he DID know that it wasn't the place for her.

Instead of arguing, because she had nothing good to say, Evie nodded. "Thank you for the advice," she said politely. It was in the next few moments that she realized how jealous she was of Sophie. She was doing quite well with Professor Dakest, she was a very smooth talker. But not only that, Sophie knew exactly what she wanted to do when she left Hogwarts. She had a passion and a plan and she knew it would work. She was smart, she could produce a corporeal patronus, she could bake cookies and she was always happy, even when she wasn't. Evie didn't know how she did it, but she was jealous.

Sitting back, Evie leaned against the back of the couch and simply continued to listen to Sophie and Dakest converse. That's really why they were here.
