Grabbing two helmets and two sets of chest armor she put hers on ignoring that it was a little bit to big. She then made her way over to the other first year and held out a helmet and chest armor to him. "You should wear these, just in case." Hady told him quietly with a soft smile. If he didn't want to take part in this that was his choosing but he should at least be safe. "I'm a first year also, I don't know very much on spells but I can help you if you like." She added after a moments thought. Maybe he'd feel better with someone his age helping him out? Hey they could always learn together right?

They had to put on protective gear. Sweet solstice she was going to die.
Penelope watched Thornton hiding in the corner. After putting on her own protective gear, she grabbed a helmet and chest armor for Thornton. He was going to need it in this class, and Penelope did not want him to learn that the way she had.
The activity was starting now, so she was going to go hide in the corner with Thornton for the rest of class and hope that no stray planets or asteroids came their way. Watching out for any potentially dangerous asteroids, Penelope cautiously approached Thornton. "Thornton? You're going to need this." She held out the helmet and chest armor for him.
Sitting down next to Thornton, Penelope said, "You will learn how to do magic. That's why you're here at Hogwarts. Nobody arrives at Hogwarts knowing everything, and if you did, you wouldn't be here to learn. It might take a long time to learn some things, but you will get it, even if you need extra practice. Charms can be difficult to learn. Not getting it your first time does not mean that you have failed, it gives you an opportunity to learn. Many professors and older students are willing to help first years like you. All you have to do is give your best effort and ask for help if you need it. If you do that, you can be a great student, regardless of current magical ability." That might have been too much for Thornton to process. Penelope could get a little carried away with things sometimes. He sort of reminded her of how she had been in some of her classes last year.
Why was he surrounded by girls?!?! Thornton took several deep shaky breaths as he realized that there were two people both offering him armor. WHICH TO PICK. WAS IT RUDE TO CHOOSE. PANIC.
Thornton grabbed the helmet from Penelope and jammed it on his head before grabbing the chest armor from Hady. THERE. One from each. The helmet was too big and so it covered his eyes, which he thought was perfect. He could just stay here with them and avoid all the asteroids and flying planet and glitter and all of that awful stuff.
"I guess," he mumbled in response to Penelope's assurance that he'd get it. He slid down the wall until he was seated on the floor. His breathing had slowed and the feeling of imminent suffocation had passed.
But then he could feel someone approach.

Penelope, a Slytherin girl and one of her firsties were huddled in the corner and not enjoying the festivities. This would not do. Jasmine walked over and sat down beside them. "Hello there. I kind of noticed that you all didn't seem to be having fun over here and the rule is, all Ravenclaws must have fun in Astonomy. Anything I can help you with?" Now she had a two missions get her Claws involved in the class and blast some more planets.
Thornton shook his head forcefully, the helmet moving at a slower pace than the rest of his head, so it bounced oddly on his head. This was not FUN. There was no way to have fun, because he could not participate.
"I can't do the spells, so I can't participate," he muttered, the combination of the helmet and his downward glance completely obscuring his face.
He could feel his heart starting to beat faster. He was drawing attention to himself which was never the intention. His father has said goodbye with a "make me proud" and between what Thornton perceived as complete failure (even though it wasn't! Look at that lumpy planet and *almost* correct name tag) and the potentially horrible behavior he was exhibiting, he had failed on all counts.
