Jasper didn't have it. He was obliviously watching the surface of the water recover from the diminutive wake caused by the coin. He might have also been scrying. Testing the tiny little wavelets for signs of trouble up ahead. He was just beginning to make out shapes when he heard a witch's voice pull him out of his incognizant state. Her words piercingly clear for the connection between his actions and the use of the word 'drop'.
When Jasper looked away from the fountain's basin he saw that the flirting couple had been looking at him. For how long? Should he have been there? It was far too early for him to have ...done his spooky thing. Besides, he'd felt none of the symptoms that his fragile mind and body often associated with such fits.
"No." There came Jasper's short, but meant-to-be-reassuring answer as he returned the couple's acknowledgement. "Well sort of. I'm sorry, do people not toss coins into the fountain?" Perhaps there was supposed to be a sign? He had a timid way of speaking, the man did. Almost as though he were certain of nothing he said. It could've made him sound like a liar, only the statements he made using this tone did not exactly warrant a fib. Quote:

.... "I didn't stay here all night." He replied automatically, pulling off a mellow face, though his tone definitely indicated otherwise. "I'm coming to the conclusion that you've never tried sleeping in your office? Actually..." Vic clicked his tongue, "... your department isn't the ideal place to doze off." What with all the creatures in there, dangerous, mutants, cute but drooly, pretty but hair-pulling.
Their interaction was eventually brought to the man at the fountain. Vic didn't get the chance to reply to Jan (he'll think of a better nickname later) because the man did so. "Er.. I've never seen people do it. Do people still believe in those..." Superstitions. "... stories?" Throwing a coin in a body of water for wish-granting, or blessings or whatever. Vic turned to look at the lady holding his arm, did she do that too? Or did the Centaur take all her attention earlier?
Pff. As if she believed him now. January just laughed and shook her head. "You are one dedicated employee." She wouldn't dare fall asleep at work, especially after hours. Most of the creatures were contained in a locked room, but still. With animal lovers and tree huggers on the same level, anything could happen. "Exactly," she responded. "I don't fancy waking up to finding my shoes gone. Or my hair." It had taken a long time to grow out, you know.
Back to the man at the fountain. She was the wrong person to ask, since it was her first day. She didn't know if this fountain was one people often tossed coins into. She didn't. "I don't know," she replied to Vic and the other man. "I don't." Just in case he was wondering. She didn't believe in that kind of superstition of fountains and wishing wells and things of the like. |
