Basically, he was just wandering. It had been many moons since Pierson set foot in the Hogwarts library and he had heard of its fire and chaos and the remodel, so he just wanted to see the changes that had been made. Plus, he liked the quiet and the smell of old books. There were a lot less people in here which really wasn't all that surprising.
