Default How do you measure a Year? - Sa 16+

Why did the illness choose her?

The word fate isn't a good enough explanation...
Background
Yukie had a terrible encounter with magic after her engagement to Charles where his pureblood obsessive family used the Cruciatus Curse on her to make an example of her. This caused Yukie to fear all magic and ban it from being so much as discussed in her home. When her children were born, she saw them as cursed and tried to perform Shinto rights to remove the curse from them. As each of her sons showed signs of magic, Yukie prayed and prayed that her fourth child would be spared. But this was not the case.

Upon seeing Kurumi born with violet eyes, Yukie rejected and refused to have any contact with the baby for a good month - causing a permanent rift to be between her and Kurumi. As Kurumi grew, Yukie hoped that in teaching her how to be a proper lady that her powers would be subpressed. She spent long hours teaching Kurumi the piano, baking, flower arranging, traditional Japanese dance, and many other things while always keeping a strict gaze and, for the most part, an unapproving smile.

It is now the summer of 2077 and their time is running out...

Dislaimer: The universe in which I am writing my story, any and all references made to cannon characters and the wizarding world are strictly the creation of J.K. Rowling.

Prologue
Standing in front of the automatic doors of the hospital in the suffocating heat, Kurumi clutched the edge of her lilac skirt and looked down at the ground. No matter how much she willed her feet to take the necessary steps forward, they seemed to be glue to the ground. Her father and brothers had already gone inside moments earlier, and the 16-year-old had promised that she would follow. Only she wasn't. She couldn't. Taking another step forward and entering the sterile environment behind these doors meant that this was all really happening. That this was it. It was all over.

Hot liquid sorrow began to stain her porcelain features as she continued to stand outside, alone. The doors parted and a family pushing a mother in a wheelchair emerged with smiles on all their faces and a bouquet of bright coloured Gerberas in the mother's arms. Kurumi was jealous of their happiness and had the selfish desire to pluck the happiness from that family and give it to her own. Why couldn't her mother receive the same fate? Why was her family destined to be destroyed by illness?

It wasn't fair.

Numb to the world, Kurumi didn't feel the strong hand of her father on her shoulder. "Kurumi," he said softly. "Come on now. We can't waste any more time." She felt her father move his hand from her shoulder to her lower back, gently pushing her forward towards the automatic doors that opened up like the gates to one's nightmares and Kurumi squeezed her father's hand as he lead them both inside to face their fears.
