A hit wizard runs by with files above his head. A witch in handcuffs is being escorted toward the lift by an auror. A cup of coffee sits on an empty desk, steam wafting out of it. Where else could you be but the offices of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad. There are plenty of desks lined up with papers strewn about and hit wizards hard at work... all within the line of sight of the M.L.E.S. The sheriffs of the magical world! The chiefs. The head honchos.

Behind all those desks are your desks contained in a neat, spacious office. Each squad member gets a big, wooden desk capable of holding case files or perhaps a lunch. Get situated at your preferred desk and get to work at getting those criminals.

Amelia walked purposefully into the office, a warm smile on her face as she saw on a handsome oak desk a rectangular plaque stating her name "Amelia Grey".

She strode up to her desk and placed her brief case on top of it as she sat down it a comfortable leather chair, rearranging her black pencil skirt to ensure minimum creasage. She was the first staff member in and she tried to take in her surroundings before she was joined by her co-workers. Looking around, she smiled to her self. "Yes," she thought, "I'm going to like it here."

Nathan staggered past the hit wizard office and entered the more spacious, comfortable office at the other end. He had come well prepared with a strong mug of coffee in one hand, a bacon buttie in the other and a copy of The Quibbler stuffed under his arm.

He collapsed at a desk in a dark corner of the room and rubbed his face with both hands, oblivious to anyone else being in the room with him. It had been a long, sleepless night for Nathaniel. His first day at work and not a wink of sleep the night before. What a great start. So much for, 'new job, new start.'

He was wearing his usual, now rather vintage looking leather jacket, ripped (not purposely) jeans and a black tee-shirt. Probably exactly the same clothes as yesterday… he couldn’t quite remember. In fact, he couldn't remember anything about yesterday. Where he'd been, who he'd seen... how much firewhiskey he had consumed... Had he even returned home last night? He groaned inwardly, still with his hands covering his bloodshot eyes.

Suddenly becoming aware of another presence within the room, he looked up slowly, startled to see an attractive young woman sitting at a nearby desk. He glanced out at the hit wizard office and then back at the woman, wondering whether she had just come into the room, or had she been there since he entered? He took a large gulp of coffee and stood up, looking at the woman intently and extending his hand. “Nathaniel Greenwood. … And you are….?”

Nicoli Vanhatck strode into the office, his midnight-blue robes flowing out behind him and his dark hair hiding his azure eyes away slightly. Standing in front of his slightly larger, oak desk and covering the plaque with his name engraved upon it; Nicoli smiled at the two that were already there and his eyes twinkled. "Hey there," he said praying they didn't know he was their Division Head. "I'm Nicoli Vanhatck."

Nicoli took them both in, his eyes twinkling. The woman was warm, efficient and professional, cunning. Perfect. She must be Amelia Grey. She was older than him. Nicoli then turned to the man, what had he been doing last night? Drinking by the look on his face. Disappointing. The clothes weren't all that inviting either, overly muggle and somewhat scruffy. Still, he seemed to have a bit of...stamina. Hopefully the man just made a bad first impression.

Nathaniel, still on his feet, kept his gaze on the woman for a moment before turning to what he thought was another other co-worker. The man was dressed in smart, traditional wizarding attire. He looked down at his own clothes and then back at the man, wishing he’d made more of an effort on his first day at work. But he couldn’t remember getting ready for work, or indeed, how he even got here was a bit of a blur.

He extended his hand in welcoming toward the new man. He looked around the same age as Nathaniel - this was somewhat of a comfort. “Good morning Nicoli. I’m Nathaniel…er.. Nathan. Nathan Greenwood.” He said in his soft Edinburgh lilt, and nodded at the man before collapsing at his desk again and sinking into his comfortable chair. “Nice to meet you both." He said warmly to the two. "Any idea when the boss is gonna get here?” Nathan just wanted to get his work done and get out of here as soon as physically possible. Mentally, he had already left the building.

Nicoli shook Nathan's hand. "Pleased to meet you," he said, eyes glimmering as he remembered Nathan's file. He'd thought this one would have been rather like himself, oh well. "Nope," he replied easily, all too aware of his brightly, betraying eyes. He glanced at Amelia and smiled at her, "Hello!" he said brightly, covering up the nervousness he felt. What if she could tell? He'll have to ride this one out as far as he can. "Where are you both from?" he asked.

Nathaniel sat back in his chair, folding his arms and propping his feet up on the desk in front of him. Nathan studied Nicoli as he asked where he and the young woman were from. Despite his pounding headache, he caught a glimpse of, well… something in the man’s eyes.

“Technically, I’m from Scotland.” he answered, taking a swig of his strong black coffee and a bite of his bacon buttie before continuing. ‘But I live in muggle London these days. In a small flat next to the tube station by the Embankment.’ A small smile graced Nathaniel’s lips for a millisecond. Blink and you would miss it. Nathaniel found that telling a wizard where he lived, was usually a good way of gauging what sort of wizard they were, by their reaction. Most wizards thought it strange a pureblood from a fairly renowned family living among muggles in an overly crowded, polluted, crime infested city. But Nathan enjoyed muggle life, their intelligence, advancements in technology; theatre, music, and culture in general, all appealed to him greatly. They also seemed to lack some of predigests which Nathan grew up with. Something which a lot of the wizarding community still held strong. Plus, it was easier to lose yourself in the muggle world. ...And less chance of bumping into your family.

He removed his legs from the desk and placed his feet firmly on the floor again, still looking at Vanhatck intently. “And what about yourself, Nicoli. Where are you from?” He asked pleasantly. “Have you worked for the department for long?”

As Nathan spoke, Nicoli perched on the edge of the desk, hopefully still blocking out the plaque from both of their views. Scotland! Of course! The accent! He should have seen it earlier. Nicoli nodded slowly, "Sounds too noisy for me," he smiled. Now the muggle clothing made sense. Quite a good choice actually. Something close to shrewd crossed Nathan's eyes once he'd said that. Brilliant.

"Me?" he asked caught slightly off guard by the question, "Oh yes. I'm Russian," he smiled, "But I came to England when I was thirteen. Lived a little off London ever since." Nicoli had spent few moments after his graduation in the house his parents had left for him, and now he had returned to it. "Honestly, I'm rather new to the Ministry itself," he replied and his mind flashed to what might be thought of him once they realized he was their Head.

Nathan shrugged. “The noise is part of the appeal.” He said seriously. And then he smiled properly for the first time all morning. The smile lit up his face and touched his green eyes. The fatigue of a long sleepless night vanished momentarily. He was a handsome man under the bloodshot eyes and black bags below them. It was only a few words, but Nicoli’s response had been more than satisfactory.

Nathaniel noted the slight hesitation before Nicoli answered his question. He was hiding something, that was obvious …and probably none of Nathan’s business. All he wanted was to keep his head down, and get cracking with his work, he may even find he enjoyed it. Last thing he wanted was to cause trouble for, or with, his collegues. He sipped his coffee and nodded, keeping eye contact with Nicoli as he explained his move from Russia.

Nathan was actually starting to relax a bit. This Nicoli seemed like a decent enough bloke. “What did you do prior to this?” Nathan asked conversationally. “I mean, work wise.”

Cassandra knocked on the office door and walked in.
"Excuse me, my name is Cassandra Carter from the Auror division, I'm looking for the the head of the law Enforcement Squad." Cassandra announced to the samll group inside.

Nathaniel looked over at the young auror who just entered the office. “I’m afraid he isn’t here yet, ma’am.” He stood up and walked over to the woman, his hand extended. “Nathan. Nathan Greenwood.” He glanced at Nicoli and then back at the woman. “Is there anything I can help with?” ‘What are you doing Nathan? Interfering with Auror related business. You’ve only just got here!' He paused for a moment and looked back at Nicoli. “Perhaps you'd be better off speaking to Nicoli here.” Nathaniel gestured towards the smartly dressed wizard, “He may be able to point you in the right direction at least.”

Cassandra walked over to Nathan as he started talking to her. She looked at the person he pointed to that was named Nicoli, didn't Forrester said was the head of the Squad.
"Thank you Nathan." Cassandra said to him and walked over to Nicoli.
"Hello, I was sent by Mr. Hufflepuff to ask you if some of your men would be able to help us on a mission to a warehouse in Graham's Village. We are a few men short this year and we need the help." Cassandra explained to him.

Shane Dalton walked into the Magical Law Enforcement Squad office with her head held high, the back of her purple double silk cloak fell gracefully from her broad shoulders and gathered itself obediantly at her pointy feet. Today, she had on her specially made shoes like always. Her shoes were made of snakeskin, she from the purple python that her great uncle Silas had as a pet back in California.

"Hello everyone," she said in her American accent softly, holding a cup of coffee that she had quickly mad before leaving work. She took a sip and walked over to the "recently new Head of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad". She held our her hand and said, "I believe that you are Mr. Nicoli Vanhatck, the new division Head. My name is Shane Dalton, member of the Wizengamont. I just thought that I would come by and give you a warm welcome. So welcome, Mr. Vanhatck."

The quietness of the office was suddenly gone and the excited buzz of getting to know her work colleagues encapsulated Amelia. Getting up from her chair, she shook hands with Nathan and Nicoli in turn, making sure that she gave a firm handshake so they knew she wasn't a puch over. "It's lovely to meet you. I'm Amelia Grey."

Amelia sat on the corner of her desk crossing her legs showing off her superb new red shoes. She had treated herself at the weekend to try and pick up her courage about walking into a new job. Her philosophy is "If you look the part, you'll find easier to act the part."

Surveying her new colleagues, she knew that she was going to part of an interesting bunch. All so different, it was going to be great working with different minds with different view points. The range was going to be extreme, but as long as everyone took pride in their work, she knew she'd get on with them.

She noticed Nathan watching her and smiled at him, intrigued at what he was up to the night before to show up at work in such a way. "It must have been a good night," she thought to herself.

Amelia then turned to Nicoli and noticed a glint in his eyes. He seemed to be hiding something, but Amelia couldn't quite tell what. Answering his question, she said, "I'm from Lancashire, but until recently I was living in Italy. I worked in the Ministry over there, but it was nothing in comparison to here. It seems great."

Then she saw another woman enter the office and approached Nicoli. Raising her eyebrows when she realised he was indeed her boss, Amelia began wondering why he hid that little nugget of information. "I'm sure he has his reasons," she thought to herself. Turning to Shane, she said "Hi, I'm Amelia, nice to meet you." Amelia held out a hand to shake, however she did feel slightly tense as she wasn't used to working with other women. Trying to shake it off, she put on her best smile and hoped she could put her pre-conceptions to one side.

From across in that dark corner of the room, his were feet proped up on the desk again. Nathan had just taken a large drink of coffee. The contents of which were almost sprayed across the room on hearing the two women address Nicoli as ‘Head of Department.’ He tried to compose himself, quickly swallowing the contents of his mouth, but spluttered a little in the process. Had this been some kind of test? If so, Nathan had surely failed it with flying colours! How stupid could he get? Nathan was normally quick witted. Lack of sleep, among other things, were surely to blame. He gave Amelia a quizzical look before looking back in the direction of Nicoli.

“M-Mr Vanhatck.” He started hesitantly. “Forgive me sir. I just assumed you were, well" How to put this.. "one of us, sir.” He sat up straight in his chair, placing his feet firmly on the floor and dropped his bacon buttie into the wastepaper bin beside his desk. ‘Way to go, mate. Brilliant performance that was.’ He cringed inwardly. He needed to get through today as quickly as possible, and go home and have a good nights sleep. Hopefully he could start afresh tomorrow. Hopefully.

Amelia couldn't help it. She just burst out laughing with a dirty laugh at Nathan's reaction, wiping her skirt where the sprayed out coffee got her. She gave Nathan a look that said "Don't worry about it, you didn't come across that badly."

She didn't know whether it was the fact that Nicoli was younger than her, or just his approachability, but she didn't feel intimidated knowing he was her boss. She was dead against the heirarchy that goes with most institutions ans refuses point blank to called people "Sir", so she just went with the flow.

Nathaniel’s head snapped up as he heard Amelia cackling at him. “Excuse me, I’m so sorry.” He murmured to the woman. Talk about drawing unwanted attention to an already embarrassing situation. Today was definitely up there among Nathaniel Greenwood's worst days ever. He wanted the ground to open up and swallow him. Perhaps he was better off working in a muggle bar on the other side of the earth. He was certainly happier there.

He was thankful, however, for the look Amelia gave him. He gave her that rarely seen smile, weak as it was. Being laughed at by an attractive older woman was definitely something he needed to erase from his memory. He could think of a few ways to do this. One way in particular being preferable to the others.

Nicoli's eyes glittered as the thought crossed his mind, then dulled slightly as she said she had worked in the Ministry before. She maybe expecting more from him. "Italy? That's wonderful!" he said.

Nicoli nodded, some people just liked to feel the outside world. What? Out of nowhere the man in front of him seemed to switch personalities for a moment. It gave Nicoli the uncomfortable feeling that he had just been tested, during his own test to them! It seems, at least as though he had passed. Nicoli's eyes glowed suddenly, mirroring Nathan's.

"I taught," he said feeling quite comfortable in the man's presence, "In a decent wizarding school in Roma-"

Nicoli pursed his lips. Thar she blows...uh, what?? The odd thought sent a shiver across his now slightly dulled eyes. Nicoli stood up straight and walked towards the young girl once Nathan had retreated towards his desk. Maybe she won't say anything... "Ah," Nicoli said as the girl, quite oblivious to his little test spoke loudly enough for the other two to hear. "I believe we can do that, urm...Miss?" Though why Forrester did not bother to come himself escaped him. "I think our assignment can wait until this is finished with. Please tell him that I agree," Nicoli smiled, "You must hate being used as an owl," he was sure that he would.

Nicoli turned to the door once he heard another voice. The place was becoming horribly busy. Nicoli shook the woman's hand, a little lost as to what was happening. Wizengamont! "I'm honoured!" Nicoli said somewhat flustered by this introduction. He smiled. She was nice. Some of the tension left his shoulders and a light sprung up into his eyes again, "Thank you, Miss Dalton. I hope I can make a difference round here," Nicoli smiled sheepishly and ruffled his hair a little. He turned around in alarm as a loud noise erupted from across the room.

Nicoli chuckled, "You alright, mate?" then raised his eyebrows to the sudden formality. "No need to be so formal," he said, his eyes almost laughing at the young man. "I am one of you...just happen to be your head too!"

"I thought it would be better to get to know you lot, before you knew who I was...of course I would have preferred to tell you myself, I probably wouldn't have until mission time," Nicoli smiled at Amelia and Nathan.

"You should know that we are a team." he said seriously, "I have confidence in both of you-despite how prepared you were for today-" Nicoli smiled at Nathan, "and that I will always consider both of your views before making my decisions." Should talk to Forrester, soon. "It seems like we've got our first assignment, too!" he said motioning to the young Auror.

“Yes. Thank you sir.” Nathaniel winced slightly, at calling the man sir again, and the embarrassment of this whole situation. And he didn’t miss the laughter in Nicoli’s eyes either.

Nathan nodded as Nicoli told him not to be so formal. But why had the man felt the need to lie to his staff? It hadn't been an assumption on Nathaniel’s part. He had asked where the boss was… hadn’t he? Maybe he was losing it completely. The morning thus far was now a complete blur to him. He needed some more coffee.

This made sense. But your boss lying to you so convincingly, on your first day of work, didn’t give you much that much faith either. Nathan was beginning to wonder what he’d got himself into here. He scratched his head, feeling rather awkward. Time seemed to have come to a stand still. Just how on earth he was going to get through the rest of the day was a mystery to him.

Nathan, relieved to hear these words, relaxed a little bit again, but couldn’t help wondering what other tests Nicoli had in store for them along the way. The fact the Nicoli had confidence in both Amelia AND Nathan was also a relief. If Nathan had been watching this scene in the third person, he would not have had any confidence whatsoever in the wreck sitting in that dark corner of the room. Nicoli, at least, was a fair leader.

He gulped at the words “It seems like we've got our first assignment.” Pretty nerve wracking stuff. And working with Aurors? Oh dear, lets pray it isn’t one of his fathers associates.

"What do you need us to do sir ..er.." 'Dammit', "...I mean Nicoli?" This was all so new to him. So different from working in the relaxed, social environment of a Irish muggle pub. He’d just have to go with the flow on this one, and prey he didn’t collapse before the end of the day.

Amelia knew this was going to be a great place to work. Back in the Italian Ministry, it was too formal, no freedom, no confidence. He boss was her boss and nothing else. Here, it seemed to be the complete opposite. Relaxed, valued, know that they were going to work their damned hardest and get results. And she had a sneaking suspicion that they were going to be friends as well as work colleagues.

Rubbing her hands together, it sounded like they were onto their first assignment.

Amelia smiled at Nathan, hoping he would relax into the role and not worry about what other people thought. He did seem pretty nervous, but from her experience from see her father's colleagues in the muggle Police, she knew that he was probably going to be the most productive member of the office. He seemed more of a people person than pleasing the powers that be and that suited her fine.

Nathan was looking increasingly sick. Nicoli took a deep breath and smiled, hoping that the two of them would be able to do this. At Nathan's question, he thought back to what he had seen in passing on the Assignment Board. "Unless I wrong, it's got something to do with investigating a warehouse? In Graham's Village?" he asked the young auror still in the room. "Forrester." Why hadn't the man come himself? Nicoli looked back at the young auror, hoping she could answer his questions. If not, he'd have to hunt down Forrester.

Amelia watched as Shane left the room and sat wondering where Graham's Village was. It sounded familiar, but could quite place where she heard of it before.

Wondering what the assignment was, she wondered why the head of Aurors, Forrester, hadn't come down and made the request himself. Maybe they would have had more information to go on. She looked at Cassandra hoping she could give them more details.

I'll go and tell him that you agreed, thank you again." Cassandra said and left the office and headed back to her own.

Nicoli turned to Shane once again. He'd quite forgotten that she was there! "I hope so," he said softly, "Of course! Like wise!" Before the clicking of her somewhat fancy shoes had faded away Nicoli realized that the young Auror had spoken again.

Nicoli's brow furrowed. They? Who was "they"? He might have to catch her again to ask her about it. "Wait!" Nicoli said, but too late, the young auror had already left. He cursed under his breath. "Right. Looks like I'm going to have to find Forrester myself," Nicoli frowned. He didn't like leaving the two of them without work, but it couldn't be helped. "I'll be right back-look busy" Nicoli shot the two of them a smile, "Get to know each other better, you know...stuff," and with that he clattered out of the room as fast as he could manage.
