If I wanted to call, say, Jim, then I would pick up the telephone that I have in my house, dial the 10-digit number for Jim's telephone, and then wait. After a few seconds, the phone in Jim's house would start making a ringing noise. Like bells, almost. That sounds alerts him that someone is trying to contact him. If he picks up the phone and talks into the correct end, I would be able to hear him and we could talk. Kinda like sticking only your head in the fireplace with Floo powder, only you can't see the other person's head!"

Yes, telephones were awesome. And so magical! Well, in the mysterious way, at least.
