Of course they were talking about communication, even though she didn't have an owl of her own. They had a telephone at her house, though. So this discussion was exciting to her, not to mention the amusement of watching the owl. It was a good thing Draco was nowhere around, though. Didn't owls eat small rodents? That would be the one reason she didn't want one, even though they were fun to watch when they acted crazy like that.

"Muggles have what is called a telephone number, series of numbers strung together which is how each telephone connects to the others. The numbers on the phone are used to dial the number of whoever they are trying to contact, and the phone, or the operator, connects the dialer to whoever they are dialing." Sometimes it paid to have a Muggle parent.
