I'm thinking he's worried they might get caught be Voldemort, or worse, his father. Well, not worse, but just as bad. But, he put his fear to the side seeing her pain and decided to do what she wanted.

Oh dear. I hate lying. This is so dangerous! I think they should have just outright told Hagrid they were going into the forrest and started off. He would have followed them if only to try to get them to go back. But at least he'd be there to protect them.
