More Then A Best Friend?

Shaun walked Catherine back one night to her apartment after a dinner at the guys apartment. She got to know the trio closely and moreover got to know about Sara too because Harry was still all praises for his ex school team’s win and the awesome celebration that Sara displayed.
“Sara, seems to be very close to all of you especially Ronald” she stated as they were walking.
Shaun snapped his head towards her looking at her for sometime as he walked he shook his head smiling and then spoke
“well, she pretty much gets along well with everyone that’s why” he said and shrugged
“and Ronald?”
“what about him?”
“oh” Shaun realized and smiled and spoke “No, Ron is this completely head over heels in love with Hermione, no one can change that, Sara has just become his sister like friend” Shaun continued and Catherine looked at him and then nodded
All the time when they had talked about Sara and Ginny, Catherine watched Shaun and saw change in him as he heard his friends talk about Sara which she couldn’t point out what it was. So she thought of asking
“So, Sara and you were best friends?”
“Are best friends” he said unknowingly emphasizing the ‘Are’ as they strolled back with his hands in his jeans pocket
“are” she murmured and smiled a bit.
“I mean, yeah you seemed to know her very well” she said. Shaun nodded but kept silent.
“seven years” was his answer.
“but how did she end up here?” she asked
“well…she came in search of one of our friend” Shaun said
Catherine raised her eyebrows “search?” she asked and Shaun didn’t say a word.

Shaun looked at her for sometime stopped walking and then sighed. He could trust to tell her, tell her everything at least as much as he knows. He began to open his mouth but then stopped and looked away and resumed his silent walk.
No he couldn’t do that. The more the people know about how Sara ended up here the more it will be a problem for Sara and much more easier for people tracking down on her to know where she is.
It isn’t that Ministry from their country will come looking for her here in England because none of the evidence that they might collect will point it out that she might be here because Shaun himself hadn’t even in his weirdest dreams and thoughts about her thought she might end up here. But he wanted to be sure that very few people know of her stay here and very few people to know how and why she came here and where is she actually from.
All this so that he could keep her trackers in dark about her living in some other part of the world. Though most of them must have taken the bait of Sara’s death but he wasn’t that very sure. A little careless talk can get them in trouble.
Catherine looked at Shaun who was about to talk but then stopped and then began to walk away. Catherine looked at him confused and caught up with him and spoke
“Shaun? What is it?”
He looked at her and then gave a small smile and shook his head
“nothing Cathe, I think I had told you right that anything relating to my past wont be ever talked again” he said reminding her
Cathe raised her eyebrow and then spoke
“well, you sound as if reminding me. But the fact is you never told me any such thing and instead you have always spoken of your past to me” she said looking straight in his eye which made him uncomfortable. This was the weirdest part. He had wanted to keep Harry, Ron and Hermione away from his past and he was sort of successful except for last few months where everything boiled out because of the letter from Juhi and Shaun and the trio later sat down and talked some important bits of his life in his old country back. But with Catherine it had been different. He somehow had opened up and told her whenever something from his past came up in between them.
“I haven’t forgotten about your dream, Shaun” she spoke softly and laid her hand on his hand.
He looked at her and sighed
“Cathe, yeah I know that but I guess there will be some parts which I wouldn’t want to talk about” he said.
At such times normally Catherine would always let go because she knew he would come around later sometime or even if he didn’t he would allow her to help him some way or the other with that problem. But this time she knew he was going to maintain it under wraps of past, his thoughts and that worried look he bears almost every time someone mentions Sara or when he himself talks or thinks of her.
This hurt Catherine. All this time (though even for a short period from the time he joined the Ministry) he always spoke to her and cleared off the matter which relieved him of all the thoughts and allowed him to relax and enjoy his current life, life with his friends, life of auror training, life where almost everyday Catherine had unknowingly become a part of it, which he had missed out on realizing but she didn’t…

Shaun looked at her as she had become quiet and he smiled and took her hand in his and squeezed as a friend would
“what are you thinking Catherine?” he asked
Catherine looked at him and then spoke
“you don’t believe and trust me right?” she said her voice hurt
And Shaun was taken aback
“what do you mean?” he asked
She looked at him, stopped walking. They were in the middle of an almost deserted muggle lane leading to her apartment
“there is something that you are hiding from me” she said
“Cathe, there are quite a lot of things you don’t know. And you, yourself told me that you didn’t want to know everything about me and was fine not knowing everything” he said
“yeah, I know, I don’t care about what you haven’t told me, but I care about what you are hiding from me” she said
He looked at her confused
‘why the hell are all girls this complicated? Why do they have to talk in such cryptic language’ he thought and shook his head
“Cathe, I don’think…what is your point” he broke his sentence and came directly at his question
“What is it about Sara that you aren’t willing to tell me?” she asked point blank
He looked at her and then realized that she had noticed that he had stopped talking about it.
He took a deep breath and then spoke up with all his honesty
“Look, Cathe. Its not that I don’t trust you, no…I trust you and all my friends but there are certain things that I wont want to disclose to anyone even you. It’s the others whom I don’t trust”
“you don’t have to talk to ‘others’ about it, just me” she said
“you always had” she continued. Catherine didn’t get what was his point. Why was he hesitating on speaking out what he was about to.
Shaun looked at her thinking on how to make her understand that the others that he was talking of are those people who might cause problems for Sara. But he didn’t say anything and quietly lead Catherine towards her house.

“there you go” he said and Catherine looked at the building and then back at Shaun.
This was it for now. She couldn’t ask for more from Shaun. She had realized that this how much he would reveal, which was almost nothing. She was feeling let down and was angry on Shaun for not telling her but she better not show it.

Squeezing his hand a bit and a slight peck on his cheek and a goodnight wish she walked away from him into the apartment lobby…
