It was the last winter that they shared. Spent in each other's company. Regulus knew that it might be the last one; that the next year might not be this generous. Or, more importantly, might not exist in the first place.

Geraldine knew, too.

Neither of them spoke of it, almost as if by mutual agreement. They laughed, they cried, they hugged, they worked, they made good use of that dark winter to be together, to have snowball fights, to dine at home. To share the secrets of a lifetime; perhaps, perhaps more than a lifetime.

But they knew.
