CHAPTER THREE: DEFENDING THE MEEK

“Why must you treat me like a prisoner in my own house!” Pansy screamed in a high pitched voice at Snape, kicking him hard in the back of his leg in order to escape his grasp. He grunted and let go of her, holding onto his leg and pulling out his wand.
He shot a spell at her, making her fall down to the ground with a tiny scream of pain. Ron and Harry ran out, wands at the ready, pointing at Snape.
Snape chuckled at the sight of Harry and Ron as they knowingly defended her. Pansy looked up at them, finally seeing them in a new light. She didn't know what to feel, watching them stand up for her. Ron glanced down at her, flashing a half hearted smile. He wasn’t too sure why, but he extended a hand to help her up. Instead of taking his hand and getting up, she gave him a strange, confused look. Snape straightened up and pointed his wand back at them.
“No duelling in the house!” Arthur yelled as him and Sirius came into the entrance way from down a hall and grabbed Harry and Ron by their collars.
“Well tell him not to hurt her!” Ron spat at his father.
“Arthur, teach your boy proper respect.” Snape said angrily and left the room.

By this time Pansy had moved herself away from in between Snape and the boys. She was sitting against a wall, staring at Ron baffled, wondering why he was defending her. Lupin walked over to her, helping her up as Arthur escorted Harry and Ron back into the living room. Lupin brought her to the furthest bed and sat down on it along with her, asking if Snape hurt her. They began whispering. Ron was watching them from the corner of his eye. Pansy occasionally glanced at him full of questions. Lupin stood, ending their conversation while Pansy got under the covers, facing the opposite way.
“Everyone, in bed.” Lupin said making his way to the door. He turned to watch them get into bed and waited for the whispers to stop. Ginny and Hermione took beds closest to Pansy while Ron and the rest took the left over beds. Lupin left the room, turning the lights out.
Ron couldn’t find it in himself to lay down. His face was glued in Pansy’s direction. He sat up in his bed, his eyes burning towards her.
Pansy could almost feel his stare on her back, but she ignored the rest of the room and drifted off to sleep, having a too vivid dream of someone touching her face and stroking her hair, whispering words to her lovingly.
The crackle of the fire awakened and startled her. She figured she must have been asleep for a few hours. She looked around and saw Ron sitting up in his bed, looking back at her. She sat up, wonderinf if he had slept.
He pulled the blankets off of him and walked over to her, silently. Her heart started to pound faster.
“Are you.. Alright? You must have been dreaming” he asked standing by her bed, concerned.
She studied him, ignoring his words and ignoring the fact that he had been watching her while she slept.
“What’s with you?” She whispered in a rude tone.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized, knowing she was asking him about earlier that night, “Snape’s a creep and I can’t stand knowing he’s hurting anyone.” He knelt down, “Honestly, Pansy…” He said, looking in her eyes.
The way he looked at her gave her a strange feeling. The way he said her name made her feel nervous. She had never heard his voice like this before, and she was feeling something new with him. Comfort.

“I don’t know what’s come over me.” He didn’t know why he was talking to her, but he liked her presence. “I want to protect you.” He told her, plainly.
She raised an eyebrow at him. “Did Potter put you up to this?” her voice raising as well.
“Sh,” He said, glancing over his shoulder. He looked back and smiled, “No.”
She tried as hard as she could to ignore the strange feeling she felt around him.
“Weasley, I think Snape maybe jinxed you or something.” She said, full of disbelief.
Ron stood up and smirked at her, letting out a soft chuckle.
“You can sleep. You don’t have to worry about anyone… hurting you.” He said. The words came out of him so confidently. Ron walked back to his bed and laid down, looking at the ceiling, feeling pleased with himself.
Pansy watched him return to his side of the room, still believing he wasn’t himself. She shook her head and went back to sleep, pushing Ron's words to the back of her mind.

Pansy awoke to find she was alone in the living room. The rest of the beds had disappeared. She figured everyone was probably in the dinning area for breakfast. She walked in and once again, just as the day before, everyone stared at her. She noticed there was an empty chair next to Ron with an empty plate. He obviously meant it for her. She glanced at him and then to Snape, feeling her focus shake. She felt her body flush with heat and couldn’t take in all of the stress at that moment so she turned around back out of the door as fast as she could. She climbed the stairs, lost in thoughts of all of the strange people in her house and the way they were acting. She missed her parents terribly. She went into her room and to the bathroom, showering, hoping all of her depression and fear would wash away as well.
Ron kept eating. He did mean the seat for her but knew she wouldn’t have taken it even if they were the last two people in the house.
She came out of the shower and sat on her bed, wrapped in a towel. She let her hair drip water onto the floor, carelessly.
She thought of yesterday, when her parents did not return home from work. And how the house became refuge for the Order…

FLASHBACK

A dozen owls flew in through her bedroom window at once, all clutching different color letters. Blocking the glare of the sunset from her eyes, she grabbed a red letter from a dark brown owl, who nudged its head on her hand looking for affection. She patted its head as she read the letter.

Miss Parkinson,

Terrible things are happening! The ministry is currently going under destruction by You-Know-Who and his followers. I am writing this quickly to tell you not to worry, an organization will be showing up at your manor, and taking refuge for their last safe house was also bombarded by death eaters. You and your parents are in grave danger. We know for a fact The Malfoy’s are here as well. All of them.

She didn’t finish reading that letter, and grabbed another.

Danger! Do not fret over the state of the ministry at this moment, Pansy. Things are not looking good, however your parents are here. He Who Must Not Be Named has taken a dozen or more workers with him. They are safe for now.

This one wasn’t signed at all. Before she could grab another, people started entering through her front door. She looked out the window, noticing them. She ran down the stairs, tears falling from her eyes.
“You must be Pansy.” A tall man said as a handful of people entered through the front door, “I am Kingsley Shacklebolt.” He informed her, “Protector of the Order Of The Phoenix.” He handed her a letter. She didn’t open it.
She recognized Lupin and Mad Eye Moody as Professors from Hogwarts. She wasn't too fond of Moody, but Lupin knew her well.
“Ah, Pansy.” Lupin greeted her. They began locking the door and placing protection charms all around the house. “I’ll explain everything.” Lupin told her, taking her up the stairs, into a hallway.
“We are a secret organization and your house has been chosen for new refuge, as dedicated by your parents.”
“M-My Parents?” She said, worried. He looked at the ground,
“This is not your fault. As you know, Voldemort has been after a handful of wizards for years.”
Her eyes widened, “He’s got them… He’s going to kill them!”
“No!” He tried to calm her. “Don’t think like that. That’s why we exist. Our organization takes immediate action dealing with his followers. It is necessary that we are here, and you are now under our protection.”
She took it all in, crying silently, worried. Just then Snape had entered the hall and looked at Pansy. She looked up at him, more frightened.
“Professor Snape will explain the rules to you..” Lupin said and left.
Snape approached her, explaining how she was not to leave.
She swore at him, “And how do you expect to keep me here?” She taunted. He took out his wand, “Pansy don’t test me.”
She stood, arms crossed. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“I have strict rules from your parents and they have given me permission to make sure they are enforced.”
She stared at his wand as he flicked it. She screamed.

FLASHFORWARD

She got up from her bed, drying off, thinking too much of the day before. She pulled on a pair of designer wizard jeans and a white tank top, letting her hair remain scraggy and half wet. She left her room and walked down the halls and stairs, trying to be unseen.
She managed to keep her hard exterior and not talk to anybody for the next three days. The order didn’t leave the house. They spent most of their time in the kitchen, planning. Harry and Hermione had convinced Ron to keep his speaking with Pansy private. He tried to talk to her more, but she kept disappearing, hiding from everybody.
