Christoph did do an excellent job in IB but for the audience these movies are aimed at it shouldn't be a surprise that he didn't win.
Plus Tom is hotter. At the same time though I think everyone nominated deserved the award in some way, but I also think Tom fans voted a lot because all over feltbeats and stuff there were reminders to vote for him as Best Villain.
But since he did win it's absolutely great *fangirls* and he was adorable in the interview.
