"Putting your items aside for a moment, tell me. What do you know, or what you think you know, about how transfiguration works? Guesses are ok. Don't quote the textbook at me." He looked over the students, an eager smile on his face.

Carter looked down at the socks again. Did he think he could change them without messing them up? Deciding against it he replaced the socks with his Gryffindor scarf from his bag. He then raised his hand. "Transfiguration changes the appearance of something." he said. "For example, if I changed my scarf here into... I don't know a teacup or something, it'll look like a teacup, but it would still be my scarf." he said. It was like the Professor explained to him earlier. If he transfigured himself into something else, he'd just look like that something, he wouldn't become it.
