Giving a half-wave to those still in the hallway, he left them to their game and entered the compartment once more. He tossed Chaucer's shoe on the seat beside him, noting that Andrea still had Chaucer's coat flung across her, and settled back into his seat by the window. Mary hooted from above him, letting him know she was glad he was back and away from the potentially girl-infested hallway, but for the time being he ignored her.
"A trog," he remarked conversationally. "Why on earth would that occur to you as the best thing to call him?"
"It was less an insult and more of an observation really." Chaucer lifted his nose, his expression haughty.
"Although I find certain unchanging things refreshing, a caveman wandering about in this century is an aberration of nature." There was a growl which caused Chaucer to put on a sort of affronted expression. He then stared accusingly at his stomach as though it had said the worst sort of profanity.
"Why must you be so demanding? Hunger truly nags like a gadfly!" he said mournfully as he dipped his hand into one of many pockets for some loose change. Rather than delight in his ability to eat unseemly portions of food, like other boys his age, Chaucer could only think dismally of his grandpere who had ballooned by 30 into a right hog. When given the choice of feeding his stomach or his ego, it was clear he would much rather prefer to indulge the latter.
