She was floored by what Rafe was saying...and it was making her angry. Why was she so angry? This whole thing was getting out of control...He was asking her to lie now. Bold face lie. Her chest suddenly had this awful empty feeling in it. She tried to sooth the hurt by bringing her palm to lay over her erratic heart. "Is that what you really want?"
"I know I'm coming off cross, and maybe it's for the best, but when I'm with you, I'm..." he slowly turned to face her. He was using all his self-control not to kiss her. But, he promised that he wouldn't cross that line and only if she asked him to do so he would.
"Marilyn," Rafe took a step forward, his hands started reaching for hers, but then he .
"What I want..." Rafe took in a deep breath. He wanted to tell her that he wanted her to be with him, but he just couldn't.
"I want you to be happy. That's all I really care about." It was the truth, but not what he wanted most in the world. He wanted her to let him hold her and to tell him to kiss him, right then and there. Even if it was their last kiss for a lifetime.
He never meant to cause so much trouble. She was the one that told him that she liked him to, and it was agonizing. He wished he never spoke to her behind the statue. It would have been easier now that way. He would probably be in the Three Broomsticks now, drinking and laughing with friends, disguising how he truly felt. He was good at keeping a secret, he had kept one his entire life.
