Out of the corner of his eye, Jake saw a few people leave the classroom and recognised their voices. Immediately, he tried to turn his head in order to watch, but his viced ear made that impossible. However, he caught the small smile and gave his own tearful one back.
Or tried to.

When Jake started crying, Mac didn't know how to react. She wanted to believe Jake was being sincere, but his behavior suggested otherwise. Regardless of whether he was truly sorry, he still needed to be punished. "Mr. Upstead, I do not tolerate cheek in my classroom, nor do I tolerate the violence you just exhibited. I could have you expelled for such actions!" Macadrian's face was flushed with frustration and her brows mashed together in confusion.
"However, this behavior seems to be very unusual for you. Did something happen at home to make you lash out this way? Is something going on? You can talk to me about them, Jake, instead of taking out your frustrations on your classmates and the staff." She wondered if there were family issues going on or if there was something more involved... Well, she'll get to the bottom of it eventually. She is a cursebreaker after all - puzzles are her specialty.
"Mr. Upstead, you will report for detentions with me every Tuesday night until I determine that you've learned that your actions have repurcussions. Combine these with your Saturday detentions for Professor Kazimeriz and it looks like you have a pretty busy schedule." Macadrian's mouth was a thin line of disappointment. "I expect you in my office tonight. And I suggest you be on your best behavior. You may receive your wand back tonight, if I'm feeling generous."
Having walked along on his tiptoes and the side of his head up in the air as if Shackleton was, like, holding his ear dead high (which she wasn't really, was she?... reflexes, you know?) Jake continued to try and pry the hand off and sighed slightly in relief when she let go. Bringing a hand up to rub his stinging red ear, and using his other hand to wipe his face, Jake sniffled.
"I-I-I sorry," he stammered, trying to look into Shackleton's face and doing his best to look ashamed. "It were a accident. Sssswear!"
Well, Jake thought accidents were alllll things you didn't mean. He didn't mean any of that stuff in there... he could barely remember it... therefore, he saw it as an accident. And he was sorry... but only sorry that he was in trouble.
As Shackleton mentioned expulsion, Jake gasped a little and hiccoughed at the same time, causing a cough or two to erupt. When he was done, Jake tried to regain his composure and started to bit the end of the thumb on his free hand.
As long as his foster mother wasn't informed about his behaviour, Jake would be happy enough. Her disappointment was the only thing that ever made him truly sorry. He ignored the questions Shackleton asked and instead thumped his head backwards against the corridor wall, quite hard, but only once. That was a kind of warning, as if to say, please just leave it. He did, however, mention just one thing without thinking. "She... tried tuh, tuh, tuh steal 'em..."
URGH! Detentions. Perfect. PERRRRRRRRRRFECT! She was right. He had the detentions with Shackleton and Kaz, then the little tutor sessions with Lawson, and then Quidditch practice, and homework, and of course all the other stuff he was having to do. Too much, man. Too much.
Practically breaking down again, Jake nodded his head frantically, not trusting himself to speak. He just wanted to high-tail it out of there. He didn't care about his things which were still in the classroom.
