The Phoenix Returns Ottery's Editor-In-Chief Resident Heartbreaker Crimson fire shot across the sky. The professors were on their feet in an instant, running toward the entrance.
“Stop!” Snape’s voice reverberated around the Great Hall. No one moved.
The Carrows had come to a halt near Neville. He could see fear and panic on their faces and could only wonder at what they thought might be happening.
“Fools! Stay here and guard the entrance to the Great Hall! The rest of you, follow me!” and Snape led the professors out of the Great Hall.
The Carrows put on a show of snarling and bravado, snapping at the students to shut up and stay seated, stunning anyone who dared move. Neville had seen their fear, however, and he felt nothing but contempt for them, now.
Overhead, the shower of crimson fire faded and Neville dearly hoped that this was only the beginning. He wasn’t disappointed. A vortex of golden sparks whirled overhead, almost lazily at first, sparks from a flame carried lightly on the wind. Then they began to spin faster, and faster still, becoming a golden cyclone. Red and green sparks flew at it from below, and Neville guessed that these were spells cast by the professors outside. The dazzling cyclone only spun faster, and the sparks ricocheted wildly.
From the center of the vortex came a high deafening screech, the sound of a hundred tormented banshees, each ghastly shriek louder than the last until the students were nearly under their tables in an effort to escape it.
Then with one last wild call, a blazing phoenix burst from the center of the golden vortex, shattering it into a thousand sparks. The phoenix’s fiery wings spread wide as it flew straight upward until it filled the whole of the spelled ceiling, blocking out the night sky completely.
Alecto Carrow spoke then, her voice small and quavering.
“Dumbledore.”
Green sparks spiraled up from the ground, taking on the shape of a serpent coiling around the phoenix. It reared it’s emerald head, preparing itself to strike. The phoenix let out another deafening shriek, and attempted to free itself with a mighty beat of it’s wings, but the serpent held it fast in it’s glowing coils.
The phoenix opened it’s beak wide as if to cry out again and the serpent struck, fangs dripping silver sparks. Neville gasped as the serpent’s head disappeared into the fiery maw of the phoenix! The serpent writhed in a desperate attempt to free itself but in the end, the phoenix consumed it completely.
The phoenix then gave out a victorious cry and the students were on their feet, cheering! The Carrows seemed to sense that this was a battle already lost and shrunk back toward the door, making no effort to stifle the rejoicing.
Neville felt himself bursting with pride and hope. He searched the crowd for Ginny and found her smiling at him, her face flushed and triumphant. An: This post is dedicated to my wild summer girl, the Strawberry Princess and Watermelon Queen.
