Waving her hand dismisively, she said, "I'm in my third year... same as you. We had this conversation on the train right about the same time we were discussing how we'll both be turning fourteen this month." And really, she couldn't fault him for forgetting... She had an impeccable memory and, besides, she was certain he had met a ton of people recently being new and all, and probably had a hard time keeping everything straight.
"So, you said you were homeschooled, right?" Mariel said, watching him momentarily. "What subjects did you like?" she added, wondering if they'd be like classes here. Of course she had been homeschooled up until the age of eleven, but her classes weren't as magically inclined as the classes here, mostly the basic reading and math sort of things. Certainly someone a little older would've had more magical training starting at Hogwarts in their third year... or they'd soon fall behind.
And then she saw a familiar face, one that she hadn't seen in a very long time. "Jenn!" Mariel exclaimed from further down the table and gave her happy wave. It was such a shame they hadn't crossed paths much at all last year. Mariel was going to make it a point not to let that happen this year.
Crap! He'd forgotten about that...which was really quite sad, because it hadn't been that long ago. Well, at least Mariel didn't seem to mind repeating herself - or if she did, she didn't let it show.
"Sorry," he mumbled, his ears turning red again.
At the talk about being home schooled, he nodded.
"Yeah, but I don't think I studied...normal subjects." He frowned, but continued.
"My mother taught me..." he paused - he hated saying stuff like this outloud. It made him feel like he was sounding stuck-up or something...but, he couldn't stop his mouth from moving for to long.
"She taught me manners and stuff. You know, I wasn't born phsyco," he said, half accusingly and half teasing.
"But I learned a bit about magic - never cast anything, though...hmm. My father, when he was home, taught me some Wizard history, and a bit of the Spanish language. And...books. Mostly I've just read from books - but boring books, that really have nothing to do with things that are important to a wizard." he shrugged. Maybe he'd read more books than he thought...
When Mariel called a name, Kel suppressed a groan.
Jenn. Fwig. Ugh. Whenever that girl was around, Kel never ceased to embarrass himself, whether it be one thing or the other. But, out of habit, Kel repeated the call, waving to Jenn in spite of himself.
