She had said she would not attend the annual ball.

Now Evan couldn’t take his eyes off her, off her silk-like hair; off her blazing eyes that refused to even glance his way; off her flowing, black dress robes.

Why had she come? Had she come to make him jealous, as he was so sure she knew he’d be? He knew he didn’t have a chance with her, not because he wasn’t good enough, but because she was too proud to admit she cared for him.

He would not have been so hurt if she hadn’t come on Avery's arm.
