She then explained, "In this method, we reduce any and all multi-digit numbers that we start with, like the year 1944, to a single digit number before we add them to the other single digit numbers of the date. So, we add the one, nine, four, and four together to get a total of 18. But 18 is still a double digit and we want a single digit, so we reduce it again to 9. Now we have all single digit numbers, so we can add them together. We get a total of 22, which is a Master Number that we missed using the first method of addition.
"For those who don't know, a Master number is a double digit number composed of a repeated single digit number. The Master Numbers we work with are 11, 22, and 33, though technically 44, 55, etc. are all Master Numbers too. Master Numbers are the only double-digit numbers we do not reduce. "I'd like for you all to use this second method on the date December 17, 1972. I'll be walking around to check your answers." John had no idea how to do it so he just sat there and waited for the next question. The Professor had total lost him, maybe after the class he should ask her what this gobblygoo ment.
