Chapter 23
Five minutes had passed and the kitchen remained empty. Ten minutes. Thirty minutes. Forty-five minutes. Benny was pacing the length of room, when a pop came from the living room. He rushed into the room, hoping to see his little sister. Disappointment sank in, when he saw it was only Axel.
“We caught three, but three more got away. One we had but was able to slip through our fingers. Casey isn’t going to like that.” Axel said, a dissatisfied expression taking over his face.
“Where is Samantha?” Benny asked, his voice cracking.
“What?” Axel asked, confused, as another pop came from the corner of the room. Benny turned sharply and groaned when he saw it was only Benjamin.
“Nice to see you too Benny.” Benjamin chortled, not at all insulted. A triumphant smile took up most of his face, but it faltered as he saw the look on Benny’s face. “Whats wrong? What happened?”
“Sammy never came back.” Benny said, shutting his eyes to try and keep the alarm from rising any higher.
“She what!?”
“When was the last time you saw her?”
Benny opened his eyes and saw that Axel was the one to ask the last question. “I saw her right before I apparated. I figured we were all meeting back here.”
“Do you think she maybe went back to your house?” Axel asked logically.
“I don’t know. Do you mind if I owl home?” Benny asked walking back into the kitchen.
“Sure. There is parchment in the drawer.” Benjamin replied, following him.
Benny walked to the counter and pulled out some paper and a quill. He then set on the counter and wrote,
Sammy,
If you are home come to Benjamin’s now! If somebody else gets this, give it to her please.
-Benny
The note was short, but he wasn’t writing a letter. Benny looked up and saw Benjamin opening the window. He let out a low high pitch whistle and ducked back inside. After a second, a russet colored owl flew into the window and landed on the counter. His big black owl eyes scanned the room, and hooted when he saw Benjamin.
Benny walked over to the owl, and it stuck it’s leg out when it saw the note in Benny’s hand. “Send this to the Edward’s house please.” He asked after tying the note to the owl’s leg. The owl hooted at him, then flew swiftly out the kitchen.
“She knew to come here right?” Axel asked slowly, leaning against the doorframe.
“We all agreed to meet here. Where are Casey and Ava? Are they ok?” Benny asked only realizing now that the two weren’t there.
“They are taking the three Death Eaters to Azkaban right now. Don’t worry about them. They actually had fun tonight.” Axel rolled his eyes.
“That makes three.” Benjamin said quietly, a smile softening the look on his face. Axel turned his head toward him and they made eye contact.
“Looks like you and Sammy have woken Benjamin up from retirement.” Axel said to Benny, not taking his eye off of his mate, a wide grin spreading on his lips.
“Looks like they have. Emmy won’t be happy.” Benjamin replied with a chuckle.
Benny would have been happy for Benjamin, if he wasn’t so anxious for Samantha. Where was she? Was she ok? Was Milo with her? Did maybe something happen when he apparated to safety? Did maybe they get caught? Was she in trouble somewhere while he sat in Benjamin’s kitchen?
Benny didn’t realize his head was in his hands until he felt something poking his shoulder. He looked up and found the russet owl standing on the table, his leg reaching out toward him. Benny took the note a little too eagerly, making the owl fly away, looking ruffled. But he didn’t notice, as he unrolled the note and saw it was as short as his was, and just as concerned.
Benny,
She’s not here. I haven’t seen her since you two left.
-Danny
“She’s not there.” Benny said shakily.
“Then where is she?” Benjamin asked.
“I don’t know.”
