The organisers of the Children's Laureate, a two-year position granted to an author or illustrator of children's books, are asking for people to place nominations for who they think should be next to hold the title. The Guardian has suggested that, having finished the Harry Potter series, maybe J.K. Rowling would have time to devote to the role.

A panel of judges, consisting of librarians, critics, writers, booksellers, and the International Board on Books for Young People, will make the final decision. They do also consider nominations suggested by readers. Past individuals who have held the title include; Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Rosen (current holder).

The only criteria is that the nominee should be 'someone who you think has made a real contribution to the development of children's books'.

To nominate, go here. Those who do so and are under the age of 14, are eligible to enter a competition to attend the announcement of the next Children's Laureate. However, anybody can nominate. Nominations close at the end of January 2009.
