Well, as long as gays and lesbians are not being treated equally, there
is a need to make people aware of hatred against or fear of homosexuals. We on this site might assure ourselves that we are tolerant and open-minded, but there are many many people who are not.
Giving this award to a person as well-known and respected as Jo is a fairly easy and straightforward way of raising consciousness. (Although I'm sure there are people worthier of the award, this is guaranteed to bring more publicity.)
