He'd been rash in his decision and it was going to cost him everything. Not only had the force of the spell not knocked Marcella from his grasp, but it had, in fact, moved him that much closer to victory. Not able to think of what else to do, Snape rushed Darrin before he could reach the door. But, unlike the last time, he did not resort to muggle violence. Instead, he pointed his wand in Darrin's face and yelled, "Crucio!"
He was not 100% sure the curse would miss Marcella, but he knew that once the pain began to course through Darrin, he'd let go of Marcella and she'd be free.
