Hmm...well, I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd suggest to take some time each day to practice the basics: shading, drawing shapes, training your eye to see proportions, stuff like that.

Instructional books are very helpful. That's how I got tips for doing portraits, and it comes from the professionals. Those books will definitely have lots of good pointers in them.

There are so many compotents of drawing that it's hard to put in a nutshell. I'm working on some tutorials right now so they'll be up in the 'Creative Tapestry' forum with the others (if they get approved, that is), so look out for those.
