Hogwarts RPG Name:
Callisto Maven
Default Chapter 3

Here it is!

~*~*~

“So, as I was saying, Ronald, you really shouldn’t fool around so much. You may as well use this last year at Hogwarts, not waste it away,” I huffed as Harry, Ron and I bustled down the Hogwarts marble staircase.

Ron rolled his eyes. “Give it a rest, Hermione. You sound more like my mum every day.”

I pursed my lips and retorted, “Well, it’s not as if—“

But a blonde-haired someone bumped into me, sending my many pieces of parchment and quills flying. I gasped and then groaned loudly, watching my bottles of ink smash their way down to the bottom.

“Oh my, was that me?” A dreamy voice met my ears. “Oh dear.”

“Hullo, Luna,” Harry greeted, giving me time to summon my undamaged belongings back.

Luna smiled vaguely. “Good afternoon, Harry, Ron. Hermione, are you all right? I am sorry about this mess.” She bent down to retrieve the pieces of parchment for me.

“That’s quite alright,” I mumbled, jamming the bent quills into my book bag, mourning silently over their short lifespan.

Smiling apologetically, Luna waved and drifted up the staircase.

She was nearly gone when Ron noticed one of her butterbeer cork earrings on a step. “Oy! Luna!” he called. But she had already disappeared in the throng of students.

“She won’t want to be missing that,” Harry commented, amusement in his eyes.

“I don’t want to be seen carrying around pieces of Luna’s jewelry,” moaned Ron, staring at the trinket in his hand. He clasped his hand shut when a group of sixth year boys passed, watching him curiously.

I yanked it from Ron’s hand. “I’ll take it to her, then, if it’s such a hard thing to do. Honestly!”

The day passed in a whirr of color and frenzied excitement. New security measures had been set up at the school—at lunchtime, dragons had been flown in to guard the school entrances.

After the last bell rang, I found myself fighting through the crowds threatening to run me over in search of Luna. According to the Marauder’s Map, Luna was sitting at one of the library study tables.

Breathing fast and most likely two pounds lighter from the excruciating physical activity required to get to the library, I tiredly pushed the doors open. Nothing could be heard but the ticking of the clock over Madam Pince’s desk. She looked up through her tiny glasses at me. I nodded to her and smiled, toting my bag with me in search of Luna.

I found her almost immediately. She raised her pale blue eyes slowly with my approach. “Why, hello, Hermione,” she greeted.

“I have your earring here; it must have dropped when you were helping me pick up my things,” I explained, digging into my bag, which proved a difficult task.

She said nothing but waited patiently for me to produce her missing earring. When I found it, she thanked me and stuck it into her ear.

My gaze drifted to the book she was reading. It seemed to have been one I had not yet read—it was entitled Ravenclaw’s Magic Baton: A Study of the Wisest Founder’s Wand. I had to conceal my laughter after I’d read the title.

“It is an interesting read,” Luna commented, seemingly oblivious to my futile attempts of silence. “Since my mother inherited the wand, I find it quite intriguing. It will be passed on to me someday.” She let a whimsical sigh escape her lips.

My eyes widened. “That’s really cool, Luna. I would’ve never thought.”

“Of course, Dad won’t let me have it till I’m older, at least of age.” Wrinkling her nose, she closed the book and ran her hand along the cover, humming tunelessly.

“I’d best be off now,” I declared, hoisting my bag upon my shoulder. I waved goodbye and headed out the doors.

“Miss Granger!” A sharp voice exclaimed the moment I stepped outside the library. Professor McGonagall was walking briskly towards me, eyebrows furrowed. “I am quite aware that you are Head Girl, but that does not give you any reason to walk the Hogwarts corridors alone.”

“Sorry, Professor,” I apologized, head lowered.

Professor McGonagall softened. “That’s all right. It is for your own safety; I hope you set an example for the rest. I must escort you back to Gryffindor tower.”
