Generally, Ginny loved the sorting. She chatted with her friends and clapped for the new Gryffindor students, but this year it was boring. She really had no one to talk to, and the new students just seemed so small and annoying. She sighed. Neville sat next to her, but didn’t speak, he just looked over at Luna who was looking back at him.
“Ask her to Hogsmeade,” Ginny whispered.
“What?” Neville asked, turning his attention to the Weasley.
“Ask Luna to Hogsmeade.” Ginny repeated.
“Wh-why?” Neville asked.
“Because you OBVIOUSLY like her,” Ginny said. Neville turned bright crimson and didn’t answer. Finally, it was time for the headmaster’s speech. How odd it was for Professor McGonagall to go and make the speech this year. How weird it was for all the returning students to listen to it.
“… and this year we’re going to have a ball at the end of the year! For those of you students that have been here at least three years, it will be much like the Yule Ball, yes, with Durmstrang and Beauxbatons returning. Durmstrang and Beauxbatons Academies are two other wizarding schools, and they will be joining us for the ball. We’re hoping to bring together wizards again, and re-inspire unity… rather then differences. Diversity! I’m sorry, but no one under fourth year may attend unless they’re escorted by a fourth year or older student.” Ginny remembered the Yule Ball. She had gone with Neville, when she was a third year. She had wished Harry would ask her, but of course… he hadn’t thought about it. He hadn’t thought about Ginny as a girl, just as Ron hadn’t thought about Hermione as a girl, until after it was too late. Now it was ball time again, and Harry wouldn’t be there. Another dance, another ball without Harry. Ginny sighed.
“Oh, the Yule Ball was so much fun…” Neville reminisced. Ginny nodded.
“Yeah…” she said softly.
“What was the Yule Ball?” a first year boy asked them excitedly from across the table.
“A dance,” Ginny answered.
“Who’d you go with?” A young girl asked her.
“I went with Neville,” Ginny told the girl.
“Who’s Neville?” the boy asked. Ginny smiled when Neville shyly raised his hand.
“I am,” he told them.
“Oooh!” the girl and the boy chorused. After a look shared between the two, Ginny smiled and said,
“We went as friends.” The girl rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, right,” she said.
“I bet they snogged,” the boy whispered, Neville turned pink. Ginny rolled her eyes, she wouldn’t be bothered by their gossip. It was the first time since coming to Hogwarts that she couldn’t wait until getting back to the common room. Instead of waiting, she decided to go for a walk. Getting up from the table, she bid adieu to Neville and smiled politely at the first years (who giggled upon her leaving). She walked seemingly aimlessly, only to wind up at the lake. She stared at the lake. It was so gorgeous, especially at night. The moon reflected off the calm surface. Everything seemed… right.
“Ow!” Ginny hollered when someone bumped right into her and knocked her to the ground.
“Oh, sorry,” a male voice said, seemingly caught off-guard. He lent his hand to help her up and Ginny took it, not noticing who it was until she stood up. She dusted herself off, only to look up into the face of Draco Malfoy. Had he really just appologized to her? He must not have known who it was, and yet… he stared at her, knowing it was her. She scoffed.
“Whatever,” she said carelessly. Funny, how that seemed to hurt him… he looked down at the ground. She stared at him, wondering what was so weird with him. Why was he out here anyways?
“IjustwantyoutoknowthatI’vechanged.” He said without a breath or space between words.
“Wha-?” but before she could ask what or why he was here, he was leaving. Ginny sighed. It was true though, Ginny had noticed. Draco had changed. He didn’t start fights every time he saw her, which had been at least a few times already.
Of course, this meant nothing. She’d go on treating him the same way. Though, of course, she already hadn’t. She’d already softened up to not picking fights every time she saw him. Oh, well, she’d have to go back to it. He had changed, she hadn’t, and she remembered what he was even if he didn’t.
It was late by the time Ginny finished thinking. Time to go back to the common room. Everyone was still there, all her friends… but it wasn’t the same. She couldn’t be friends with them anymore. As much as she didn’t want to believe it, it was true. Ginny had changed. She’d grown up with her brother, best friend, and love leaving her and these were petty, immature girls.
“Ginny!” they giggled as she came into the dormitory.
“You look amazing!” one said, the other’s chorused yeah’s.
“Where were you, during the sorting and all?” Ginny just sort of, waved her off. She’d never thought about it, but most of her good friends were seventh years. They’d either left, or she didn’t have the same connection with them anymore either… since Harry, Hermione, and Ron had left. This was going to be a lonely year if she didn’t find new friends, fast. Hagrid. That was it. Tomorrow she’d go to Hagrid to talk, she decided.
