Article: Latino Review with Jule Walters on PoA
Julie Walters talks Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Recently I interviewed Julie Walters for the upcoming Calendar Girls. She was a lot of fun and dropped some tidbits on her future roles in the Harry Potter franchise. I think she’s great as Mrs. Weasley. She has a few lines in Azkaban, but will have a bigger role in The Goblet of Fire. Fans of the books know that as the story continues, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley become more integral to the story. Let’s hope the filmmaker’s stay true to the books and feature Julie Walters more.
What’s it like working on this film compared to the big budget Harry Potter films?
Walters: Well, no, I don’t really get those films. Harry Potter is the only big budget film I’ve ever done. It’s not like I don’t do big budget films. But it is a nice contrast. Funnily enough, Harry Potter, considering it’s so enormous, is very cozy. It’s lovely going back each year. It’s really lovely.
Do you get attached to the children? You’re basically seeing them grow up in front of you.
Walters: I love those boys! They’re my boys, the Weasley boys! They sent me a card saying, from your boys, it was really lovely. They’re lovely kids. They could have been awful; you know how children can be. They chose them really well. They’re really nice, and the girl as well, Emma [Emma Watson, Hermione]. It’s gorgeous.
How was it working with Alfonso Cuaron as opposed to Chris Columbus?
Walters: I’ve got hardly anything in the third one, but I have more in the fourth. We start next year, but I’ve only got a couple of lines in the third one. Hello! That’s one of them. (Laughs) Hi! Good to see you! That could be the other one. I didn’t get to know Alfonso that much, but he was lovely. Christopher Columbus was very concerned that whoever took over had to be right for the children. Alfonso is gorgeous with the kids. He’s really nice. It will definitely have a different feel. We had a French costume designer. The Weasley’s are so chic. I still have my poncho! (Laughs) But it hangs in a different way because it has these beads that pull it down, just gorgeous. He got the boys looking more real. The twins have acne and things like that. They are teenagers. It’ll definitely have a different feel, but I really don’t know how different it will be. I did so little on it, but I can’t wait to see it.
