Honestly, thank Merlin's favourite speedos that 'Bellaire' was listed so high alphabetically. Brom knew if he had some name like 'Zebedyzane' or whatever that he'd end up so restless and fidgety as to bring shame upon his family name. Or something. As it was, there was only some minor movement as he rocked lightly back and forth on his feet, waiting impatiently for this monumental moment.

There were no nerves. Brom had thought long and hard about it and decided that he didn't really mind where he ended up, except that maybe it didn't sound very Live Love Laugh to be housed down in the dungeons. But his mother had been a Slytherin, so being put in her house would be pretty neat whichever way you sliced it. Though he wasn't really expecting that to happen.

So yeah. No nerves. Only excitement and a feeling of great anticipation. Oh how he hoped he wouldn't be one of those who was sorted instantly, so he actually got to savour the experience with the Hat. But also, oh how he also hoped he wasn't a dreaded Hatstall, who kept the whole school waiting an extra five minutes before they could get on with the feast. Can you imagine? Nightmare. Way to make friends, champ.

"Bellaire, Brom."

Perking up instantly at the mention of his name, Brom stepped towards the stool in what he hoped very much was a saunter, but was really far too eager for anyone to call it such. He sat himself down, the Hat was lowered onto his head, and he waited.

Hmm.

Excellent. First obstacle dealt with. He was making it think. No instant sorting for this kid. Straightening up on the stool, Brom tried hard to think 'definitely not a Hatstall' thoughts.

Let me see. A thirst to prove yourself, an ambition to achieve, though you lack certain qualities to really see it through...

Okay. Rude. Brom frowned at the inside of the Hat, but didn't interrupt. Because he wasn't rude, unlike some fabrics.

Yes, it's clear to me that you are plenty bold, that's interesting, so maybe... hmm, no. Not quite. A thirst for knowledge here too, but again...

This wasn't sounding good. Like, way to kick a kid right in the self-esteem. The Hat was also sounding dangerously close to indecision, the kind that could keep someone sat here for five unrelenting minutes. Brom gripped the sides of the stool and resisted the urge to take a peek at his watch, though he'd neglected to do that before he took this seat, so wouldn't have a very accurate reference point.

The Hat gave a sort of chuckle. This just in: Hats can laugh.

Not to worry, I think I know where to put you. Gryffindor might be a good fit, yes, you'd make real friends there. In fact, you'd not be out of place in Ravenclaw or Slytherin either. You have some daring, though it's limited and conditional. You are loyal, though perhaps to a fault. You want to learn, though it is not your real priority. You have ambitions, and determination, but what you truly value, well, that tells us our answer. Yes, I'm quite sure. You belong in...

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

Brom heard the last word shouted to the Great Hall, and gave a great sigh of relief as the Hat was removed from his head. Not a Hatstall. Couldn't have been more than, what, two minutes? He'd take that. He'd had his Genuine Hogwarts Experience.

And now... realisation hit him, and a tiny, Hufflepuffily evil grin spread across his face. He hopped off the stool and made for his new house table, ready to claim a seat right by his big sister. She'd escaped him for a full year, but no longer.
