Annika’s eyes opened a bit wider as she realized she had startled the boy, but otherwise hadn’t telegraphed any more of a reaction to start. She hadn’t thought the bookshop would be that dangerous, after all. Well, maybe if it carried her dad’s books it might be, but those wouldn’t be on the shelf with dragon books, as she let her gaze flicker toward said titles.

“No”, she replied after a moment. “At least I don’t think you are?” She let herself peruse the shelf a bit more before returning her eyes to him.

“D’you like dragons?” It was an innocent question.
