A deep breath and quick sip of his coffee helped to clear his head a bit, and when he looked back up, he was smiling. “Wouldn’t be the worst thing,” he said easily in response. Still, he did take a bite, chewing thoughtfully and paused for another sip of his drink before speaking again.

“Don’t get me wrong; I don’t want to downplay the adventure that is the post,” the teasing hint was back to his words, “But I’ve heard that the Ministry has its moments too.Politics and research, and all. Is there any specific sort of hybrid that you’re working toward?” And look, he’d even take this opportunity to eat more of his food. No worries here, Jordan. Keep talking all you want.
Jordan laughed softly, the sound low in his chest as he watched Collin put his 'advice' into practice by taking bites of food. There was something oddly satisfying about that, though he couldn't have said why.

"Politics less so," he admitted with a slight grimace. "I leave most of that to people who actually enjoy arguing over permits and regulations." His shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "Research, though? That's where the fun is."

His gaze drifted briefly toward the window before returning to Collin.

"A lot of what I work on is practical. Improving resilience, usually. Plants that can tolerate different magical environments, recover from spell damage more easily, that sort of thing." The explanation came more naturally than he'd expected. Usually people's eyes glazed over somewhere around magical environments.

"But there are a few personal projects mixed in there. I've been trying to develop a hybrid between a Snargaluff and a particularly verdurous species from the Mediterranean." The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, his expression shifting into one of amusement. "The goal was something medicinal that could thrive almost anywhere without requiring constant care. Instead, I somehow ended up with a plant that grows beautifully, heals wonderfully, and reacts to being disturbed by launching thorn-covered seed pods at whoever gets too close."

Realizing he had been rambling, a beat occurred to take a sip of espresso before his eyes met Collin's again.

"What about you?" he asked genuinely. "You don't strike me as someone who ended up running the Owl Post by accident." His thumb traced absent-mindedly around the rim of his cup. "Was that always the goal, or did you just wake up one day and realize you were destined to be responsible for an entire fleet of owls?"
