| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf The delayed drag of the silver sheen airspace finally loosened its grip several excruciating moments after releasing the quaffle and she exhaled sharply through her nose as momentum returned to normal beneath her broom. Calliope's eyes slid sideways as Cloggs materialized beside her again like some deeply judgmental hallucination and it was only by some miracle she didn't spit fire back at him.
Ahead, the quaffle exploded free from Viano's throw like a cursed cannonball and her head snapped toward it instantly, sharp focus returning as instinct recalculated angles and speed in rapid tandem ― and then she spotted Ariel diving after it.
The sight distracted her for half a heartbeat — red hair whipping violently in the wind, grin visible even at speed, flying with the sort of reckless joy that made watching her deeply hazardous to the brunette's concentration and the sixth year hadn’t even the decency to join the better team whose color would have absolutely complimented her hair.
Calliope jerked her attention away just in time for movement to explode into her peripheral vision. The iron ball came hurtling out of nowhere with wildly questionable aim, courtesy of what looked suspiciously like one of the younger Beaters swinging on instinct and sheer dumb luck alone. Normally, avoiding it would’ve been effortless.
Unfortunately, the thing barreled toward her precisely as she clipped the edge of another Silver Zone.
"Oh snitch ―"
Her broom resisted immediately, movements dragging sluggishly as the bludger tore toward her at horrifyingly normal speed by comparison. Calliope twisted hard sideways, every adjustment feeling maddeningly delayed as the bludger whistled past close enough for wind displacement to yank strands loose from her braid and vanished past her shoulder by inches before continuing onward into open air. ●—————◦◉◦—————● CJ had absolutely zero business being this happy during an organized athletic evaluation. His broom responded beautifully beneath him as he shot through another gold shimmer zone with a bark of laughter that got ripped away instantly by the wind.
Yup. Totally obsessed with this. Cloggs should make this a permanent fixture for all matches.
Which was probably why the drifting gold shimmer of one of the Fast Zones had baited him so completely. In hindsight, it was actually kinda genius. Real messed up psychologically of Cloggs, but also sort of genius. Because for one glorious stupid second his brain had gone SNITCH and his entire body had reacted before the rest of him caught up. Toss a bunch of floating gold around the pitch and suddenly every Seeker candidate was out here developing trust issues with basic colors.
It was pretty funny, actually.
CJ twisted enough on the broom to spot the younger Gryffindor navigating her own way through the shifting airspace and immediately flashed her a bright thumbs up mid-flight.
"THAT'S IT, TINY LION!" he yelled encouragingly across the pitch to her. "DON'T LET THE WEIRD SKY SOUP BULLY YOU!"
And then—
Gold. Actual gold that darted instead of wafted.
"OH, THERE you are—"
Without hesitation he dropped lower into a racing crouch over the broom handle and accelerated hard, cutting diagonally across the pitch toward the flicker of wings weaving near Horntail’s side of the field.
He burst through the edge of a silver shimmer and corrected came a half-second too late, turning his sharp banking maneuver into something significantly wobblier as the broom dragged beneath him like someone had tied an anchor to its bristles. The third year threw all his weight to one side , barrel rolling free of the silver zone and burst forward again at full responsiveness that nearly launched him clean off the handle from overcompensation.
"WHOA — okay, there we go —"
CJ yanked hard on the broom to follow the glint of gold, his momentum carrying him straight through the edge of a bronze shimmer zone and instantly his world flipped. Sky became ground, ground became sky, and CJ ― whose brain already struggled with basic word pronunciation on a GOOD day ― processed this development with all the grace of a raccoon discovering peanut butter for the first time
Then athletic reflex kicked in. His body adjusted before his brain caught up, twisting hard with the broom while laughter burst out of him again despite the chaos of it all. Because honestly? This RULED. His hair hung wildly upside down while he shot inverted across the air, one hand briefly slipping from the broom handle as he pointed excitedly downward — upward? — toward the snitch.
Somewhere nearby, another Seeker was also closing in toward the teal hoops and CJ caught the movement from the corner of his eye.
"Ohhh, now we got ourselves a C-H-A-S-E!"
His trajectory carried him dangerously close to the teal hoops where Marina hovered in fierce Keeper-focus and CJ visibly reconsidered his entire flight path for approximately half a second before committing anyway.
"Heads up, Marinara! Incoming friendly neighborhood disasters!"
Not that he was aiming for her. The other dude surely wasn't aiming for her either. Just unfortunate circumstances of the snitch actually ― sort of ― was aiming for her.
