Edgar Cloggs seemed, for perhaps the first time all morning, almost content as he drifted lazily above the chaos with his arms folded behind his back. Students darted through warped airspace below him in flashes of teal and orange while the enchanted zones shifted unpredictably across the pitch.

“Barrington, much better,” he remarked as the fifth forced herself through the Silver Zone with visible disdain. The ghost disappeared for several seconds before emerging beside her again. “A player who learns to work with resistance instead of against it becomes considerably more dangerous.”

Then Miller went screaming past somewhere overhead. The enthusiasm was commendable, but the lad's survival instincts remained under review ― particularly with the way García Massey glared at him after.

Speaking of, the blonde's sharp turn around the hoops earned a low hum of approval. “Excellent composure, García Massey. Keepers who remain calm amid chaos tend to keep all their teeth.” Which, historically speaking, could not be said for all of them.

Very Gryffindor of you, Thanatos-Misra.” Then, after a beat as the boy shot forward with obvious exhilaration: “And considerably less blind than before. A triumph for hair management everywhere.”

The seventh year’s clean interception near the Silver Zone prompted Edgar to whistle sharply through his teeth. “Good anticipation, Forsfelle! Quidditch rewards players who think ahead of the play rather than simply chase after it.”

Meanwhile poor Porter looked approximately three seconds from losing focus entirely as a Bludger ricocheted unpredictably away from her wild swing. Yet she had connected, and that was significant for someone with as little experience as she was presenting.

“Porter!” he called as the first year recovered from the impact, swiftly crossing the pitch to glide alongside her. “An ugly hit still counts as a hit. Remember that before perfectionism convinces you otherwise.”

Not far off, Patterson’s broom darted wildly away from the converging Bludgers with wide-eyed panic. Edgar winced sympathetically as she narrowly avoided disaster. “Careful, Patterson, but fleeing blindly tends to create new problems rather than solve old ones.” And she may fly faster without a Quaffle tucked under her arm, but there was only so much one could consider at once ― and her instinct for speed was not, inheritably, a wrong one.

Above it all, Amstern shot free of a Silver Zone toward the far hoops with renewed speed, adapting impressively quickly to the delayed transitions, while Miller was still distracted by flashes of gold that did not actually belong to the Snitch.

Edgar let the chaos breathe for another few minutes before his voice suddenly carried urgently across the entire pitch once more.

“Oh MY — one detail I neglected to mention earlier.” He sounded entirely unbothered by this oversight. “Because this scrimmage is already a grotesque violation of conventional Quidditch structure, I see no reason to enforce traditional positional limits. Numbers exceeding the standard line-up for Keepers, Chasers, Beaters, or Seekers per side are perfectly acceptable for today.”

A Bludger whipped straight through his translucent torso ― yet another thing he appeared completely unbothered by.

“Forty-five minutes remaining, hopefuls! Plenty of time yet to impress. Carry on.”
