Because unfortunately there was recent evidence supporting that claim and the memory arrived so vividly she nearly folded in half from secondhand embarrassment all over again.

And then Cat did the horrible thing.

The reasonable thing.

Marina narrowed her eyes immediately.

“But I asked you first,” she informed her with immense conviction, like this was a matter of sacred conversational law. “That means you answer first. Then maybe I decide if I’m emotionally stable enough to participate.”

“And also,” she continued, “you’ve worried about me approximately eight thousand times recently. It is literally my turn now. You don’t get to pull the Uno reverse card every single conversation.”

The point softened a little near the end though, concern threading through the dramatics despite herself.

“You forgot dinner in, like, the second week of term, Cat. That’s not even academic excellence anymore, that’s wizard negligence.” Marina leaned back slightly against the bench, eyeing her with exaggerated suspicion. “What are you even studying that intensely already? We barely got back.”
