"I am trying not to encourage it," he said, a chuckle flicking through his words. "If it had been accompanied by scent... we would all be having a very different morning."
He let the humor linger in the air for just a moment, watching the boy’s face as it shifted from uncertainty to something lighter, more entertained. What truly caught Victor’s attention, though, was how the kid recovered—not a hint of frustration, no hint of embarrassment either. Just curiosity reshaping itself. Victor nodded slightly to himself, impressed.
As the second wand settled into the boy's hand, Victor stilled, every part of him quieting. He did not interrupt the wonder. Did not speak over the soft fall of golden dust or the quiet awe in his voice. Instead, he watched not just the magic itself, but the connection forming in real time. He stepped closer, his chest lifting.
"Spruce," he explained, voice low and thoughtful. "14½ inches. Jarvey tooth core." He paused for a moment, his gaze flicking from wand to boy. "It is not… an easy wand," he went on. "It prefers a steady hand. One that knows what it wants, even when it hasn't quite decided how to get there. It will argue with you, on occasion. Not literally with words, but with the spells you want to perform and what ones it thinks you ought to perform... so you'll need a firm hand as well." His lips twitched slightly. "And it is rather fond of doing things with a bit of flair. You may find it takes a bit longer to master counter-curses, whereas its counterparts...may come with ease."
Victor's gaze softened, the ghost of that earlier fondness returning, and his thoughts flicked briefly to .the adults and mentors in this child's life. Sincerest apologies should this boy develop a particular fondness towards jinxes and hexes ― Ollivanders could not be held responsible.
"But," Victor said more softly, "it does not choose lightly. When it finds the right person, it is loyal — fiercely and ardently so ― and responds well to humor." His warm brown gaze settled more fully on the boy.
"Congratulations," he applauded, a sincere warmth rising in his chest. "Will that just be the wand for today? Or do you need a wand holster or other care items?" [14½ brittle spruce with jarvey tooth]
Clearly Mr. Shopkeeper here had an excellent dental plan. Or spent a great deal of time keeping his teeth healthy. Then El was laughing, amused as the feedback about a potential first attempt with the wand was made. He didn’t think he’d have been mortified but he’d pity everyone in the shop. Judging by the interactions with the man, Eloy was pretty sure whatever catastrophe may occur {or had occurred since his tenure at the shop} then it all would be expertly taken care of.
But this second wand!
It was pure perfection! {Don’t ask El how he knew, he just did.}
With a thrilled wiggle like an eel {the nickname ‘Eel’ was one his dad gave him, by the way}, he settled his gaze on Victor once more. He hung on to every word, determined to remember each detail about his new bestie. “Ooh, it’s going to keep me on my toes, is it?” Rather than being put off by the notion, Eloy was quite looking forward to the challenge. “I’ll just have to work harder with those counter-curses then… but what fun I’ll have mastering jinxes and so forth easily!” those eyes of his shone brightly. “I’m quite looking forward to it. And all the fun we’ll have together, since it sounds as though we’ll both enjoy humorous situations.”
With another grin, he bowed slightly at the applause. “You have been a big help, and I thank you for that!” Job or not, Victor sure knew how to make a young one feel at ease. “Oh, a holster, please, and… some polish. Have you any holster that complements the physical appearance of this wand?” SPOILER!!: Sweet Victor! <3 Quote:

It wasn't just the magical response he noticed, of course, but also the amount of conscious effort it took for her to steady herself. The way she carried herself and how that quiet resolve found its own rhythm ― while also wishing the wand well, that part was particularly darling.
And then it came.
The subtle bloom of magic, of course — but also something more. The way her posture relaxed, the guarded uncertainty fading into something more assured. Victor saw it immediately. The magic might have been delicate, but the change in her was much stronger.
As the last glittering traces of blue faded, adding a pleasant shimmer to his dark hair, he took a small step forward with a proper grin in place now. "Without a doubt." Victor ran a hand through his hair, his palm now lightly dusted in blue shimmer. "11¾ sturdy walnut with unicorn hair. A very adaptable wand. A wand that tends to favor those who think and feel in equal measure... creativity with intention." A small pause followed, just long enough for the weight of his words to settle. Then he added, "Unicorn hair cores are steady things. They respond well to care, to patience, and to people who don't force magical performance. And in return, they are remarkably loyal."
There was a softness in his gaze now, something like a quiet pride, though not for the wand itself, but for her. "It will do very well in your hands." He allowed for another quiet moment of her with her new wand before continuing. "And speaking of care... will you be needing anything else for your new companion today?" [11¾ sturdy walnut with unicorn hair]
Saina’s keen mind replayed the words, and determined that Mr. Kindness had an excellent point. One may just need to do some digging a little deeper to find that value, but just think about the treasure trove of potential knowledge that may await.
It was true: she did feel more relaxed. In addition to the happiness and wonder she felt, there was also a surge in her confidence. No, the wand didn’t bring her confidence, it added to it. SQUEEE!!!
Sai resisted the very strong urge to squeal excitedly. Honing in on the details of her wands that were being told to her helped quite a bit. It warmed her heart that Victor seemed so pleased for her. “Oh.” That was a lot to process, but it was all great things, knowledge that would be treasured for the rest of her life. “Creativity with intention.” These words too were mulled over before a nod was given. “Then I think that me and my new walnut friend here will do wonderful things together.”
Tears threatened to overcome her again at his words of belief in her, as well as the gaze that was received. “Thank you,’’ Sai replied, gratitude evident in both the simple words. “Yes, actually. Polish would be lovely. I do intend to keep this wand in its current healthy form. Also, a holster. Do you have holsters with flower patterns on them?” Sai did love flowers, especially those that looked like an egg. No, not the ovate sort, the ones with white petals and a yellow middle. |
