The activity Amstern had planned, however! He was particularly interested in the Chess Room. He wasn’t an expert on the game but he was decent enough. Either way, any option would work for Harvey. He couldn’t wait to find out! So, it was with great anticipation that the first year got to his feet. He ended up standing behind Nebula and he poked her lightly in the arm just for the fun of it. It helped that they were friends so it wasn't like she would get angry at him. Or so he hoped.

Once his turn came, Harvey stepped through the door.
As soon as you cross the threshold, the door closes and disappears.

You now find yourself in a cavernous stone room, the ceiling rising high above. The room is well-lit by torches hanging all around the walls. And in the center sits a large chess board, each piece almost life-size. The pieces have already been moved into various places, as if a game was in the process of being played and was abruptly interrupted. On the other side of the room, past the chess board, there is another door, currently blocked by a black pawn.

In front of the chess board, there is a sign that reads:

Find the best move for white to checkmate the black king.
If you find yourself stuck and in need of a hint, tap this sign with your wand.

Then came the description of the activity... and his attention sharpened.

Potions and chess.

Well. That was… well... that was something, for sure.

His gaze flicked briefly toward the newly conjured door, then back to his desk. Potions had never been his strongest subject with it being too exacting and too unforgiving of wandering thoughts, but chess, well, he had a decent head for patterns. Still, the word endgame made his stomach give a small and traitorous flip.

Endings seemed to be a theme today, yeesh.

Nyle hesitated, fingers curling against the edge of the desk. Working alone meant fewer variables, fewer chances of letting someone down. It was safer. It was also… lonely, in a way that felt particularly loud after everything that had already been discussed.

He risked a glance sideways, the instinct to gravitate toward Aurora was immediate and embarrassingly strong, his head and neck already angling her way like a plant leaning toward the light. Or maybe the two second years beside him would get the wrong idea and attempt to recruit him under the tragic misconception that tall automatically meant big and strong.

When he stood, unfolding himself carefully from his chair, he felt every inch of his height and tried not to apologize for it with his posture. He lingered a moment at the edge of the forming queue, Merlin willing he not overthink himself into paralysis before he even crossed the threshold.

Really she didn’t need to consider it at the moment as she was still young. She wouldn’t be 17 until the end of March.

It was time for the activity, and Aurora was looking forward to it. Potions was one of her best classes, and she was in the Wizarding Chess club. Really this was going to be fun. If she was going to have a partner, she of course wanted to team up with Nyle. No question there. She glanced over to him, and saw that he was already looking in her direction. So that was settled then.

She walked over to him. ”Want to work together?” BEAM.
The door opens and closes behind each student or pair of students as they walk through, and the queue gradually shortens.

You may follow whenever you are ready, young students.
