But this wasn't any other moment. The weight of the small box in his inner pocket pressed harder against him now, and the words Hartley had just spoken seemed to hang in the air, sharpening his nerves once more. You're not going to break up with me, are you?
Dafydd froze, his gaze snapping upward, his smile faltering for the briefest of seconds. Hartley's voice had that edge of humor, but it was laced with something else. Daf could see it in his eyes: the faint flicker of worry, the undercurrent of vulnerability.
He swallowed, feeling the dry knot in his throat. This exact moment had been played in his mind a thousand times already. Merlin, why was he so nervous? What he wanted to say really wasn't anything complicated. "Hart," he began, his voice dropping lower as he found the courage to speak. "There's something I've been wanting to say to you for a long time. It feels right tonight, to say it, here... with you."
His hand slipped from Hartley's to his jacket pocket, pulling out the small, velvet box that had been tucked away so carefully. The cool air surrounding them suddenly felt warmer as he held it out, open. It was then he knelt down on one knee.
"Will you marry me?"
Hartley laughed. It was quiet but filled with genuine mirth because his Dafydd was funny. “Then you know exactly why I go goofy whenever I’m with you. I doubt that’ll ever change.” That behaviour would always serve as a reminder to just how much he was attracted to Daf.
The instant the question was out of his mouth, he wished he could take them back. It was obvious, the effect the words had on Daf. Nevermind his own feelings; Hart never wanted to hurt Daf and his question in this moment of anxiousness had caused him to speak without thinking. He opened his mouth to apologise but was closing it a second later after his love started speaking again. Daf tilted his head slightly in bewilderment; this did not sound like it was a breakup because there was never a right moment to do so… was there?
His gaze followed Daf’s hand as it withdrew from his and the second he saw the box, he knew what it meant. His anxiety evaporated, though his racing heartbeats stayed in place because… he had not been expecting this! Even before the question was asked, Hart knew what he wanted to say. Now only if he could get the words out as he smiled goofily down at his boyfriend down on one knee.
Hart cleared his throat but he would still sound hoarse in his daze. It was definitely due to all his feelings. “You’re the only one I’ve ever want to marry.” This was very true. Dafydd was the only one who had been able to tame his wild heart. So, with happy tears welled up in his eyes, he held out his hand for the ring to be slipped on. |
