But from the moment the magical instrument made contact with his fingers, a warm feeling started to rise up from his fingers, all the way up his arm. With baited breath, Xerxes gave the wand a flourish and instantly red and gold sparks shot from the wand tip; showering the walls and ceiling with tiny multi-colored stars that lingered for a few moments and then faded slowly back into nothingness.

"This must be destiny" thought Xerxes. Not often did the very first wand a wizard was shown choose him. It was as though the wand had been waiting there for years, just to imprint on him.

"I think this is one!" he said delightedly. "What kind of wand is it? I don't remember if you told me or not already. I was just so excited to be buying my first ever wand."

Xerxes was smiling so broadly that it was almost indecent. He could not remember ever being so happy.

Zeke, who had broken into a grin as soon as the wand had even been taken from its box (so sure was he that they'd found the right match), full on beamed at the boy's declaration. "I think so too," he said in agreement, showing just as much enthusiasm as such a situation warranted.

He gave a small chuckle. "Completely understandable, but not to worry. I'd not told you yet." Always saved that part until last; more fun that way. And, seeing as the moment had arrived...

"This wand is twelve and a half inches of pliant alder, with a unicorn hair at its core," Zeke said, giving a small nod towards the wand in question. "Alder wands are loyal, steadfast companions, and is the best suited to non-verbal magic. Something that may come in handy when you reach that part of your magical education in sixth year or so." Though, of course, a lot of it did also come down to the aptitude and the hard work put in by the witch or wizard in question. All the same, that attribute did bolster the alder wand's reputation of being suited only to the most advanced witches and wizards. "Alder also has a useful attribute in that it protects against drowning, plus it's well suited to all elemental magic, so, fire, water, earth, and air spells. It provides a boost to shielding and protective magic, and those with an interest in potions tend to get on well with these wands. Now, as to the core, unicorn hair wands are very faithful to their owner. Very few blockages or fluctuations occurring in the magic they produce. With this core, the wand is also well suited to charms and transfigurations and is excellent for healing spells, but more difficult to turn towards the Dark Arts." No speculations, no judgements, just general wand advice he'd give to anyone sold a unicorn hair wand. The same advice he himself had once received, in fact. "You'll find this core is more in tune with subtle and delicate magic as opposed to flashes and bangs. Generally, not necessarily a hugely powerful core, but very consistent, and very reliable. You should get along very well with this wand."

Know who else was smiling? Zeke. Naturally. He clapped his hands together once and beamed down at his customer and her new wand. "Congratulations," he said. "We have a match!"

And a fine match it was too. Zeke nodded towards it now as he began his spiel. "This wand is eleven and a half inches of solid dogwood, with a phoenix feather core. A charming wand, if you'll pardon the phrase; see the pale pink blush and the darker streaks in the wood?" It wasn't ever really about which wand looked nicest, but you had to admit, an attractive grain could be a real plus, depending on the customer. "A wand that's perhaps a little more on the, ah, quirky side, but dogwood has been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions. However, it has a tendency to refuse to perform non-verbal spells, and its spell work is often noisy, flashy, and otherwise playful." Fun... though perhaps not ideal. Still, non-verbal magic wasn't the be all and end all. "One thing that might interest you: dogwood owners tend to be lucky, and these wands are perfectly capable of serious magic when needed. Now, wands with this core - phoenix feather - are definitely capable of a great range of magic, but can take a while to master, so don't get discouraged if you have a little trouble there at first. These wands have great initiative, but they're a little picky, and their allegiance is hard won. Once you manage it, however, they are powerful, versatile cores. Defence Against the Dark Arts is likely to come easiest to you with this wand, and hexes and jinxes are often the easiest spell-type for these cores to master."

All things considered, it was actually a very interesting combination for a wand. The quirky, mischievousness nature of the dogwood when combined with the serious, aloof detachment of the phoenix. Definitely one of those 'fun zone' wands.

"Ash, he said nonverbal magic. That's just like what you do!" He didn't like the idea of cursing anybody, because that sounded mean. So he was relieved to hear that his wand wasn't pro-bullying, because he didn't want to be that kind of kid. "I promise I'll only hex people honorably, if that's even a thing at all. And I'll take the best care of my wand!" He meant that, by the way- there was no hint of joking in his wide eyes, just earnest-ness. He moved towards the counter so that his family would pay, because he wanted to have his wand back in his hand as soon as possible.

Zeke gave a good-natured little chuckle. "I'm very glad to hear it. If you ever take place in a little arranged, consensual duelling, you'll find there's certainly a place for honourable hexes." And more situations besides, but now was not the time to go into the ins and outs of a conversation like that. Enabling the wand-acquisition excitement was his priority first and foremost. "And even more glad to hear that. Best of luck to you with that wand of yours," Zeke added, before the business of paying and completing the transaction got underway.
