Phoebe, of all people. Phoebe who moved through the greenhouses like a shadow trailing vines, who always seemed like she belonged to the plants more than she did the castle walls. He’d been silently admiring the way she worked whenever they occupied the same spaces—the way she pressed the soil just right or whispered to her herbs like they were old friends. And now she was offering to include him? It felt like being knighted.

"Oh—I mean—only if you're serious! Because I would love that. Like, I’ve got a propagation shelf back at my dorm, right? For this weird breed of moonshade moss I’m trying to hybridize with regular water clover? And it keeps glowing in the dark, but only at weird intervals, like when someone’s sad in the room—which might actually be my roommate being homesick but still. I don’t know if that’s empathy or a coincidence, but either way, it is pretty cool!" He stopped, inhaled like he had to anchor himself before he floated clean off the stone floor. "Anyway. Just. Erm....I mean....erm...Thank you."

Then he turned, still smiling so hard it tilted his balance slightly, and motioned her toward the middle aisle of Slug & Jiggers, where the herbs were stacked in labeled tins and the sun through the dusty skylight made everything glow green-gold. He walked ahead a bit, the basket swinging at his side, glancing back now and then to make sure she was still following. It was strange—he’d been in this shop a dozen times before, but now everything felt a little more important. Like the act of choosing herbs had gained weight just because Phoebe was here, letting him be part of her world. His words flowed easily as they went down the aisle, excitement bubbling up in the space between facts, not because he was trying to impress her, but because it felt good to be useful. It felt right to share something he loved with someone who clearly understood it, too.

His third year at Hogwarts was already off to a blooming start, and he officially couldn’t wait for it to grow from here.

"Of course I would let you help." Phoebe liked having younger years around. Besides, the look on his face made it pretty obvious that it would make him happy, and making other people a little happier was the thing she wished to do.

She'd always thought that she was better with nonmagical plants than the magical kind, but she was pretty darn good with magical plants too, so she wondered if she could help him figure out the glowing thing. "That sounds new and interesting... I'd love to see that." And she had an idea for how to see if it lit up in the presence of sadness specifically- but she wasn't going to tell him what the idea was yet because it was, of course, kind of sad. "You know where to find me, right? If I'm around, I'll be in the greenhouses like I always was." No greenhouses meant Phoebe was in her dorm or doing something else that didn't include other people.

Phoebe let Nyle lead her around the store to ALLL the herbs. It was really nice, for once, to have someone around who was both enthusiastic about the things that she liked and enthusiastic about her. It was nice, too, to let someone be her friend without trying to shut them out.

Phoebe may- possibly- potentially- maybe- have been smiling. For real.
