Cooper tilted his head slightly, offering a gentle smile as Quinn spoke about her mother. He could hear the sadness in her voice, but he also noticed her effort to shield him from the weight of her emotions. It was something he understood well, though he would never call attention to it. Instead, he nodded with quiet understanding. "I think sometimes people don’t like to rely on things they can’t control, even if it might help," he said thoughtfully, not pushing the idea of potions further. He paused for another moment before adding with a smile, "If only we could all get our twenty cats, eh?"

As Quinn gently scooped Tofu into her arms, Cooper couldn’t help but smile. He’d seen his fair share of cat cuddles, but there was something about watching someone so fully enveloped in a moment of joy that always made it more special - he wished he had his camera nearby to capture the moment's purty. He stepped back quietly, giving her the space she needed, when she turned away to wipe her eyes. He didn’t speak, not that he needed to in the first place. Sometimes ... people just needed a bit of uninterrupted time to collect themselves.

When she turned back, Cooper offered her an understanding look, letting her ease into the conversation with no pressure. "No need to apologize. I - well, I understand. The way things pile up, sometimes so quietly you don't even notice until it feels like too much." Cooper glanced at Tofu, the little purring bundle nestled against Quinn, and his smile softened further. "That's when creatures work their magic best, I think. They don't ask for explanations or solutions...they just know when you need them. In ways we don't always understand, but they do." He gave a small, knowing nod and reached over into Tofu's bowl for a couple pieces of kibble. "It's their own kind of empathy. No judgment, no expectations... just warmth when you need it most."

When she introduced herself as Quinn Kingsley, something clicked, but not quite enough for him to make any solid and tangible connection - he may have recalled a Sorting, the hat always being robust in its announcements, but that was as much as his memory could offer him. "Quinn Kingsley," he repeated softly, rolling the name over his tongue. "I - apologies, I don't believe your rings any bells,” he lamented with a half shrug, his smile sheepish but warm. "And... you were close. It's Cooper. But... Colin works, too. Honestly, I answer to a lot of things." His smile widened a little, trying to lighten the moment. "Nice to make your acquaintance again, Quinn." As Tofu's purring filled the space, he couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, the universe had a funny way of letting people find their balance again - even in the smallest of moments. "There were...plenty of transfers after that time. Can't say that I entirely blame parents for their reasons. Imagine it was almost herculean allowing their children to return to a school that was literally a battle ground." Olivia had nearly been among those and, thankfully, that had not come to pass. "I think we're all a bit different after everything. Different choices, different paths, and sometimes... things change in ways we never expect." But then something, a sliver of a memory, came to the forefront of his thoughts and his eyes suddenly widened. "Wait ... were you ... among those kept locked up in that room?" he inquired softly. "I - was in there too. Got myself thrown in their on purpose because - well, I was trying to keep someone else safe in there. I, er, I told stories while we were locked in there... especially in those later hours after supper."
