| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Nyle blinked, the last remnants of his breathless rambling still caught somewhere between his lungs and his throat. His fingers curled instinctively around the plants in his palm as Felicity giggled at him, the warmth in her tone making his already-red face somehow even warmer. His mouth opened - possibly to insist he was totally breathing - but then she called him pet, and his thoughts splinched completely. “W-what?” he blurted before he could stop himself, blinking rapidly. Pet? That was… well, it was a word. A word he wasn’t sure he’d ever been called before, at least not directly or to his knowledge. He had been called sprout and mothling by mum, bud and mossy by dad, and beebee by his aunties - but never pet. He scrambled to figure out if it was an insult or a joke or something? Was he supposed to respond to that? Pretend like he had a tail to wag? It didn’t seem like she’d meant it in a bad way… but was he supposed to say something back? Would it be weird if he didn’t? “Erm. Thanks, uh… you.” Oh, Circe’s saplings, that was nothing, that was actually worse than saying nothing at all.
He realized he had sort of just been standing there, agape, for an uncomfortably long time - a realization that did not help the urge to ramble, for the record. His hands, still lightly dirt-smudged from his earlier foraging, clenched and unclenched awkwardly around the greenery in his hands as his brain caught up with the rest of her words. Sort of. “Oh! Right! Um, yes, I should-wash up, definitely, that would be… best...uh...house elves likely won' appreciate the dirt trail I trekked in either so I ought to tidy that up too," he stammered, nodding rapidly, as if trying to physically will himself into a composed state. “Uh, and - I can, uh, make something for you, yeah! Of course! It’s—shouldn’t be too hard! Just a little, uh - just a moment and I'll do just that. After I've washed up, of course, so there aren't any contaminants in the cream...”
His words, unfortunately, came out in the same hurried tumble as before, though now distinctly more flustered. And still, his mind kept circling back to pet. Nyle made an abrupt, retreating gesture toward the stairs to his dormitory before he could embarrass himself further. “I’ll—I’ll just—be right back!” he squeaked, practically tripping over his own feet as he made his temporary retreat, pet still ringing in his ears but at least now with a task to focus on that would hopefully recenter him and lower his body temperature back down to something reasonable.
