Hope was momentarily distracted by the hem of her robe getting caught in something sharp near the mouth of the tunnel, so she didn't see the strange lizard until she was nearly nose to nose with it. And from what Hope remembered, they didn't do anything particularly threatening, except that it was supposed to be able to shrink in size. That would make it particularly difficult to catch! Fortunately, Hope wasn't being asked to catch one, just to get by it and out of the tunnel. Making it shrink would make that a deal easier, she decided, and reached out a finger to stroke its back as it scurried by her (besides, she was longing to touch it!)
