Alfie knew what was coming next. He had thought about it the entire summer and then the entire way to King's Cross and then the entire train ride and then the entire boat ride and then now. In fact, once he had started thinking about it he never happened to stop. He had thought about it so hard that he had just about thought through every possible scenario.

And in his head, this is how it went: Alfie Adair was ushered into a line up in the Entrance Hall for just about forever. After properly sweating through his under layers, he'd then be ushered into a line up in front of the dais (where every Professor would be sat). Just in front of him would be the hat that would decide his fate, but before it had the chance, it would sing the most intricate song about Hogwarts. And then once it was time, he would be called first. Alfie Adair. Both names conveniently coming at the very beginning of the alphabet and it was his burden to bear. He would make his way up to the stool as confidently as he could manage. He would sit down and the sorting hat would tell him to go to Mia's house or whatever house Brooksie ended up in later. Then he would make his way to his new house table and wait for Brooks to be sorted next (thankfully, his name was also at the very beginning of the alphabet). And finally, they would eat.

Of course, the reality was far more nerve-inducing, sweat-producing, and awkward.

They called his name at least twice. And both times, he had heard it. His legs just needed a moment to catch up with his brain.

By the third time "Alfie Ad--" he had finally made his way to the stool. He sat, legs bouncing, as the hat was placed upon his head. Perhaps after years of wear (or maybe Alfie just had a small head), the hat drooped over him and obscured his sight. It was probably for the best, Alfie didn't need to see to know that all eyes were on him.

He GULPED loudly in anticipation.

"Ah, another Adair, eh?" Alfie nodded. "Yes, sir." It was a sir, wasn't it? He felt his face burn up.

Alfie also felt bad for whoever had to put the hat on after him. His forehead was lined in sweat. "Mmm, but nothing like your sister. No, you take after your father..." This went on for the longest singular minute of young Alfie Adair's life.

In fact, the youngest Adair sat under the brim of the hat praying for the moment to be over. He wanted to take it all in, but knowing everyone was watching him, hearing the hat in his head, it was all just Too Much and he couldn't wait for it to be-

"Hufflepuff!"
