As for letting him rot, “No, of course I wouldn’t,” her words innocent and sweet, unlike the way she usually spoke. Of course she’d let him rot there, but only if he truly double crossed her. She did not suffer fools more than once. Once is an accident. Twice as intentional or sheer stupidity. Following him down the hall, she kept her eyes set on the walls, scanning from portrait to portrait.

Regardless if Sloane wanted that vindication, Ary would have offered it anyway. That was just how it was with him. Rather than be angry or become hostile about being called ‘silly’, he laughed in amusement. If there was one thing most did not know about him, it was that he didn’t care what others thought of him. “Well, I’m glad to have surpassed your low opinion of me.’’ An eyebrow arched in disbelief. Sloane’s words seemed to be sarcastic but he could be wrong. In any case, he was unbothered.

After what seemed like an endless walk, they came to the end of the corridor. “Don’t seem to be no griffs, no dragons here.’’ Yes, Ary was disappointed. “Maybe they’ve gone to visit another portrait.” If that was the case, then he was bound to come across the creatures at some point. “Got to head to the barnyard now. Promised Professor Paton I’d help her with her creatures. You want to come along?”
