Asking one of the adults about the lake, especially their Herbology professor who just so happened to be the groundskeeper, was something that she had to admit she hadn't considered right away. "It wouldn't hurt to ask. And if he doesn't know, he might be able to set us up with a meeting with Sir Bartholomew Henry or one of the mermaids." Otherwise she was certain that somewhere in the the library was a book with the information. Or, assuming what her brother was thinking, they could go for a swim in the lake and just find out for themselves.
"Casting spells verbally under water can have different effects as far as I know," Gillyweed informed her brother before considering rope conjuration. "In theory, it might work on a few of them if you do manage to conjure ropes, but then you'd be leaving them behind tied up and unable to fend for themselves. Plus, by that point, you'd likely have a horde of grindylows coming at you from all directions."
