And things = books.
Lately, he wanted to read murder mysteries. He had devoured the books that had belonged to his Gran, both the English and French ones, and now he was on the prowl for more. He came to a stop next to another boy, and being much too shy to say anything first, he merely tilted his head to look at the stack the boy had gathered. His cheeks turned red, though, when he realized how bold this was, and he then turned his head rightways and took a step back. "S-sorry-" he said quickly as he went to turn away. Kenneth was entranced by his stack of books, but he was so used to being the only noisemaker in his uncle's house that he noticed every footstep. He looked up when he realized someone had stopped nearby, a little worried that it was his uncle come to say time to go. It wasn't his uncle, though, it was some boy...maybe his age. Looking at his stack of books?
And apologizing for it, evidently.
Kenneth saw no need for any apology. Cautiously, Kenneth took the top book from his stack and held it out towards the boy. A peace offering, one might say. (Not that the book was actually his to offer, as he hadn't purchased it or any other book. Yet.) "Did, well, would you like look at this one?" he asked in a quiet voice. It was his library voice, which he used any time he was in a room of books, even though this room was not a library. |
