Javier had a whole ~history~ with love and Valentines and all that, which would explain the grumpy mood - not that any of the students would know that. Or WISH to know about that, honestly. It was a sad depressing story but he had to push past the uncomfortable bits because this lesson was super important. Speaking from personal experience in the matter.
Plus, he had to admit it brought a little smile to his grumpy face to see how excited all the kids were at the valentines he'd laid out. And as for Brandon, he was going to just act like he hadn't heard him at all. Yup. Didn't hear that embarrassing little slip up at all! He was far too busy looking at this...pile of confetti by his feet.
Each student got a smile and nod in greeting as they came in, as Javi was more content to watch them discover their valentines at their desks than engage in idle chit chat. "You're quite welcome," he said in response to Auden who thanked him for the cards. And just like that, it was time for the lesson to begin.
He waved his wand to close to the door behind him, locking it to keep out any stragglers, and stood up, beginning his usual pacing in front of the chalkboard as he started the lesson.
"As I'm sure all of you have noticed, there are quite a few construction paper valentines around the room," he began with a smile. "For this mini activity, you can either use the one I gave you and write on the back, OR if you want to save it for yourself, you can come grab a spare one off my desk here," he explained, gesturing to a pile of un-marked hearts on his desk.
"Today, we will be talking about love potions - although probably not in the way you think," he added with a little smirk. More on that in a bit. "As many of you are probably aware, love potions smell like something different depending on the person. It's part of what makes them alluring to everyone. For example, when I smell a love potion, I smell fresh rainwater, my mother's homemade enchiladas, and raspberries. Obviously not all at once - that would be weird - but the smells sort of...cycle back and forth every few seconds," he explained.
"I want you to write down on the back of your valentine what you think YOUR love potions would smell like to you. Typical love potions usually smell like your three favorite things, although some more potent potions - off market, of course - can smell like four or five depending on how...determined the person using the potion is. You can share with the class if you'd like - or you can keep it private, it's up to you," he added, well aware how many can of worms he could accidentally open in their social lives if he MADE them share their answers with the class. "You may begin!"
